wobbly wheels

Post by jex_the_bug »

help!
over the weekend iv gone from a set of 35s to 37s and when i got them fitted they said they were having problems getting them balanced. all was good but at low speed they got a real wobble on once or twice. then i got the tracking done and now its worse then ever. if your going straight ahead a hit a small bump it starts wobbling and gets worse till you have to slam the brakes on and stop.
is it that i need a new steering dampener? or is it something else?

Are you chasing it with the steering or is it just vibrating really badly?
What sorta truck and lift??

I've only seen this sorta thing with trucks that have had massive long shackles stuck on em cos the owner was going all el cheapo lift.

Are all the wheel nuts done up??

My creepys balance up fine, needs a bit of lead (Truck weights and stickys) of course but do balance nonetheless. Truck runs up over a hundred without any shakes.
I would think something else could be causing it it gets worse and worse at constant speed and you have to brake and stop its so bad.

yer creepys on a hj60 with spring over. its not just a vibration its full on wobble. its not there all the time like wheels out of balance.
yestoday it was fine at 100 and getting up there to. tracking was out a bit (toeing in) so got it sorted and now at about 40/50 it will start when you go over a lump or bump and you can feel it comming and a seconed later your slamming on the brakes. the truck feels like its going to fall to bits. :(
iv checked the wheel nuts as it felt like they were loss but all good there.
all i can think of is the dampener is not up to the job.

at a guess everything was ok on the old tyres and the problems only started when you put the other tyres on?

my creepies were really bad on my old flipped centre beadlocked rims, I had between 500-900gm weights on each wheel and still had a really bad low speed wobble, before I had them ballanced I couldnt drive it between 40-60kph it would just start jumping and banging with the death shakes and you had to stop the truck and start off again.

I've got them on different rims now and fine tuned on the ballancing machine and they are driveable but far from perfect

try getting them ballanced again or done somewhere else?

wot he says

just recently threw some used 35" creepies on my 80 from 33s

about 40-60kph the wheel would almost rip out of your hand and viloently shake the whole truck then smooth out only to come back in at 100 but with less violence

I went to my old work and rebalanced the fronts only myself and after about 300 grams on the outside and 400 grams on the inside of each front wheel the viloent shake had gone

but then i ran into the bias ply tracking issue where the cruiser would try to leave the road by itself

find a patient tyre shop whos done them before and go from there, also if they have truck weights that would be helpful as they have a larger amount of weight concentrated in a smaller space

Was thinking the same as Al, but you said you had a 60 series, so it will be leaf sprung yeah? Check the bushes as well anyway.
I had a death wobble in the old truck that was so bad it broke the tie rod, and that was down to panhard bushes.

I had a smiliar problem once but not as bad as your describing..got real bad shake at about 80mph(wasnt a 4wd lol)
1 of my fronts was both bunkled & also out of round... ie tyre was elipital instead of a circle...
You could try putting the rears on the front ..might make a difference.

Although it sounds like tyres, you say its a sprung-over 60? When was the last time you checked the u-bolts to see if theyre tight?
Reason I ask is when I was reading about doing a SOA on a cruiser (think it was on IH8Mud) one complaint was violent death shakes after the SOA conversion. That turned out to be loose front u-bolts.. Just another thing to check

iv checked the u bolts.only because they where loss when i check when i first got it but there good and tight. also it has just passed the WOF so all should be ok under there really. even thowe i know they miss stuff all the time (thank god).

getting the tyres rebalanced tomorrow. i had a play under there just a min ago and noticed there are 5 big weights on the inside of one or the rims. they go almost 1/2 way round the wheel. that cant be right.

and i will get a photo or two up for you if i can work out how.

yup thats about right

but thats why you wanna try and get some truck weights coz the idea with balancing is to try to locate the weights at TDC, so when they start ceeping round the rim its gonna make them harder to balance

I went for a max of 300 grams on the outside of my rim, then did the inside with stick on weights that are all located close together

if you get simexs then it gets harder again as they regularly ask for 500-700 grams of weight on each side

must be the tires. it was fine with the old 35s. i will be taking it back tomorrow to get the tracking redone. but dose anyone know if because of spring over i need the tracking set different from standard?
the diff is tipped forwards heaps so the caster will be way out right?

In the pic there rear is way higher than standard.
Usually the body sits roughly parralel to the ground ...this will of changed the steering slighly...maybe thats what caused the problem.

Would have screwed the caster (king pin angle) even more I guess. Probably put it right under the contact patch or maybe behind it considering the lift.

i get the same thing with my 36's and the cure is very well ballanced wheels and a bit of toe out.
the lead on a couple of my rims goes half way round cos i dont have any truck weights so use whats available
