80 Series winch, 24V or 12V

Post by Mudde1 »

I have a 12v 80 Series with 2 batteries and a 24 volt starter motor. for some years I have had a 12v winch on it which is wired across the right hand battery. Now that it is time for a new winch I am looking at options. My understanding is that the factory winches are a 24V winch that is connected to both batteries and this is the set up that i would prefer to use. I am able to locate the 24V power supply to the starter motor, but it only works when the key is in the start position. i am not able to locate a "full time" 24v power supply. my 2 questions are,
is this understanding of the factory winch correct? and if so,
how do I set this up with an aftermarket winch?
Tony.

This is my understanding. The winch on your 80 series is a 12Volt winch. My one had gone so I installed an aftermarket 12volt winch.

The only thing that is 24 volt in your truck is that starter motor. And those Tauranga boys have been removing those and run everything 12 volt.

Even if your winch is only hooked to one battery it will still be draining power from both in parallel.

Hope that helps.

Absolutely factory winch is 12 volts. Follow the wiring and you'll see factory loom goes via big isolating relay (located under passenger battery) to passenger side battery. 80 series are 12 volts except when starting.
