Thirsty 2.8 Hilux

Post by Petemcc »

Hi Guys

I have just bought a 1990 2.8 double cab lux and it seems to be a bit thirsty and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas.

I am getting about 300k on a full tank. No dents in the tank took just over 50L last fill.

It pumps out a fair bit of smoke when under load which doesn't seem too common for these trucks.

From what I can tell the odometer seems relatively accurate so am ruling that out.

I will be replacing the air filter when I get back to town later in the week though the one in there doesn't too tooo blocked up.

The previous owner told me he has put in a thicker head gasket because he was thinking of turboing it but didn't get round to it so that could have some impact.

I am also planning on getting the injectors cleaned as it has done high ks.

I am only running 31inch tyres and I would be expecting it to be getting about 450k to the tank, is that about what others are getting?

Any other ideas? Anyone had similar issues in the past that they have solved?

Cheers,
Pete

maybe the old owner wound up the fuel pump for a bit more "go", is it black smoke it pumps out when you put your foot up it?
Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!

Yea I thought that might be the case. It definitely looks black and yip it's whenever you have your foot up it in every gear and even on the flat as well as on the hills. I did ask him if he had adjusted it at all and he assured me he hadn't

Lower compression engines have a lower peak theoretical efficiency than a higher compression engine. This could have something to do with it but to be honest I don't think it would have that much of an effect.

we had a bighorn come into work that had the same issue, lots of smoke, lack of power...

we found a dead rat fused into the air filter....blocked about 50% of the filter...

easy fix..

also check the fuel filter

Yea air filter is on the list but it doesn't look like more than a dirty filter you would find in most cars. Though could be an idea to check the snorkel is clear I suppose.

Hi I'm not a HiLux guru but have an idea that with Safari snorkels they supplied a foam filter that was fitted into the top tube of the snorkel to reduce the inlet noise, was used on non turbo HiLux's, check for that being blocked. Disconnect the air cleaner and give it a run, see if any improvement. Continuous Black smoke is fuel being wasted.

NOT THAT THERE IS ANYTHING WRONG WITH A SMOKEY ENGINE,

FITZY.

got the injectors reconed today. Well actually did an exchange for some recon ones at diesel pumps on park house road. They seemed like a good bunch of guys. The old injectors were opening 40bar to early, 120 rather than 160. I never realised how high pressure they where!

Also got a new air filter (and gave her an oil change for good measure.)

Seems to be smoking less will see how far i get out of this tank. It's is running really well at any rate for the amount of ks on it.

Will update when this tank is empty.

Cheers,
Pete
