Hello there-help help help

Post by X-busfixer »

Firstly hello to everyone out there, I'm so glad that there is places like this dedicated to all things off rd
I am reasonably new at this off road game but from what I have seen so far it is going to be a blast!!
I am the proud owner of a 1987 ln61 surf, it is powered by a 2.4 2lt which apparently was lifted out of a 1987 prado? It stands tall and proud with a 2 inch body and 2 inch suspension lift with a set of 33 x 12.5 mongrels tucked underneath.
When I acquired the truck it's engine was sad and smokey so I bought a 2.4 that had been lifted out of said prado and proceeded to do an engine swap.
Having spun spanners underneath buses for a number of years there isn't really much on a vehicle that I won't give a go. And generally there is nothing but positive results after a bit of hard yakka and alot of thought, planning and execution.
So I thought best thing to do here is down load the manual and rip into it. Well it turns out that I had to swap alot of gear over from my old motor and in the process discovered that what I have is 2 different series motors and parts interchanging wasn't as easy as I first thought.
This is one job that has been hard from the start and is proving rather frustrating, I thought I was so close but I am currently feeling like it is 2 steps forward and one back. Therefore I am even more dedicated in seeing it through to the end and getting the usual positive results I am used to
I am currently having oil pressure issues and it not really the type that you would expect, has anyone ever seen one of these motors manage to pop an oil filter at the seams ??

some oil filters have a relief valve built in to them, is it the correct oil filter?

Surely is. I work for a company that sells oil and filters (i shall name no brands) And have definitely put the right one on.
I changed the oil filter bracket over from my old engine to the new one and now have this issue.
I have sifted through the many forums and it would appear that no-one anywhere in the world has had this issue.
I have removed and tested the "relief valves" as per the engine manual, while I had the filter bracket off, and I still have this issue.
I wonder wether there is a "relief valve" that is part of the oil pump assembly.... Does any one out there know???
I have my old motor laying on the garage floor to pull apart and have a look, but if someone out there knows the answer it would save me a couple of hours work.....

Thanks kbushnz, after reading that post i shot out to the shed to investigate. I can see where the by pass valve would be on my old motor but after sticking my head underneath my truck there appears to be no such hex head bolt on the new motor
Hmmmmm now I am worried i'm gonna have to pull the motor back out and start again.

Ah-ha.
After studying those pictures more I can see that the oil pump relief valve is actually on the other side of the engine.
Will pull it out later and see if it is ok.
