surf 4runner 2.8 diesel, Strong engine?

Post by u13turbo »

Hey guys, found a surf for sale, its a 92 4runner with the 2.8 diesel. Looks pretty tidy, but its done 464k's on the original motor! surely it must be on its last legs? or are these motor bulletproof? guy wants 2.7k is that good?

unless it is otherwise perfect (yeah right) or motor was reco'ed not long ago then its overpriced. most likely you looking at a new motor very soon. its also a bottom spec surf so none of the nice stuff the upper models have.

i doubt it on the vans. they are really low geared and rev their nuts off especially with lead foot courier drivers. most get sold off at around 400tho for a reason ;). however i have seen one that was 400tho and bore was reasonable for the km's but cavitation of the water pump killed it.

but to do a reco is not a major. trouble is its an old vehicle. how long is the rest of it going to last.

i'm looking for one myself, the body of my toyota has rusted out at 250tho so wouldn't mind a cheap surf to throw the engine into.

They are pretty strong motors and are known to do high ks.

K's in a diesel 4wd mean nothing as a lot of people wind speedos back and it is hard to know the history of old trucks. Some might have low ks on the speedo but high ks on the motor and have been thrashed and poorly serviced. Others maybe the opposite. Just see how it goes and offer him a bit less than what he is asking. The end of the day you have some bargaining power.

I have seen really tidy ones of these with mid 200's on them go for just over 4 and a new motor is around $1800 for a reasonable 2nd hand one.

it will still only be what its worth now, just more easy to sell... i spent 12g on rebuilding my 1HDT but my 80 is still only worth what someone would pay for it.....

Heaps of black smoke + blue smoke, definitely not keen on it now...
