Carby 1uz
Looks like the old surf has the cracked head...
So a good excuse to swap out that boat anchor.
Pretty keen on doing a 1uz conversion but taking the injection off and bolting a holley on it. I've figured most of it out thanks to the speedway boys using them but I dunno if I can run an auto without the computer and not keen on a manual.
So give me your ideas.
Truck is a 92 VZN1430.
Cheers

Is your goal to make a dirty, unreliable, underpowered heavy peice of shit?

Re: Carby 1uz
My goal is to have something I can fix out in the bush.
I'm sure the engine wouldnt be much heavier than the standard engine if not lighter and it would definatly have more power.
As for unreliable I don't think carbs are unreliable they are simple and easy to set up and use.
Now I was asking about gearboxes.
So if you have an idea about that let me know ya dirty unreliable piece of shit.
Thanks

LOL, you got owned Tu's
But seriously, ya gonna need the computer anyway, unless ya plan on fittin a dizzie as well, so why not leave it injected?
If ya get the wiring done properly (see professionally) ya shouldn't have any probs anyway
Got a Daihatsu Something, hasn't got a Daihatsu engine.... or diffs.... and it doesn't have windows.... or doors.... but its got tyres....

No I didnt.
I can fix my injection in the bush. There is really not very much to go wrong with a decent injection system.
Fitting a carby would make it more unreliable and make less power, along with worse economy. I can go into detail if you wish?
If you want something that is carbed then a 1uz is really not a good choice. The main problems with them and water is to do with the ignition system. Something that you would not be correcting by getting rid of the injection. Fitting coil packs would.
Re the gearbox, I believe the crown 1uzs have a seperate auto computer to the engine management computer so you could use one of those. Other auto computers are useable such as surf oens but they have the wrong shift points. I would rather go the way of a manual shifting auto tho and they are relatively easy to set up

Re: Carby 1uz
Haha yeh I'm not blessed with those skills.
I thought a manual shifting auto would be difficult and needed to be set up in a workshop?
I've heard of aftermarket ignition only computers being used on them that only require 3 wires and are pretty reliable. Assume they'd be reasonably waterproof.
Dace; I heard the wiring is the most expensive part of the conversion? I guess thats why there are so many round with dodgey wiring too.
Turoa; What carb engine would you suggest? I figure with the 1uz being done a million times makes it alot simpler and cheaper.

its not the computer being the problem, its the dizzy caps are not sealed to the outside of the engine, meaning water and shit can get in and kill ya sparks

for what you pay to get a ign computer you might as well pay some one to wire them up, not to difficult, all info is on the lextreme web site

350 chev is a good start, most fuel injected motors now run electronic ign, or coil packs, which makes getting them going with out a computer very difficult, look for a Lt1, ali head chev,

Re: Carby 1uz
Stock 1UZ with a stock computer. Spend some time water proofing the two dizzies that it has rather than messing around moddifying it to be a carb'd motor.
Unless you are doing hardcore river crossings a bit of time and silicon will get the crank angle sensor, dizzies, spark plugs and cam covers sealed nicely and shouldn't give any issues.
Matt.

As already said, plenty of people are running these motors off road. Water is the biggest issue and fixable.
Dont forget the speedway boys are using the engines in a different way to us off road. They plant the foot and keep up the revs.... And they want a very simple system....Which they can tweak on the day deopending on conditions / fuel etc etc.
They don't use the whole rev range like you will... Well some of the rev range

The crown had a separate ECU for auto... Could have difficulty finding one.
Yes you can do a manual conversion to the auto...
Or you can get an after market controller in from the states.
There are many that will work for the A340 style auto's as they typically use 3 to 4 solenoids depending on model.
But I would say someone has a Kiwi style fix out there.
If and when my diesel packs a sad, I am going to get a motor, auto with harness ecu, airflow meter etc etc.
Adaptor for transfer case and keep it as much as factory as much as possible, water proof it as the guys have already done...
Run it and go from there....
Have fun....

You can also use a Jeep Auto ECU on a 340 Seris auto, had one on my 2JZ Prado. You'll need one from a cherokee but I can't remeber what year...

Thats pretty interesting guys cheers for the advice and info.
Re: Carby 1uz
Ive just ordered a Crown 1uz, not that hard to find, there front sump with viscous fan, complete with everything.$1500. Auto has its own Ecu, I wont be using the Auto ECU if you want one.
Re: Carby 1uz
crown's with the twin computers are mid sump not front.
Re: Carby 1uz
Oh well I must be wrong, but its front sump, with viscous fan, with auto and auto ecu. thought only Crowns had the Viscous Fan.

Re: Carby 1uz
Hey Juz i'l let you know about it. With everyone convincing me to go injected I'm kinda thinking I may as use a 2jz was my old plan. Heard they are basic as to swap in.

Have a look on Lextreme, but i've never heard of a front sump with viscous fan and separate trans ecu. but then again stranger things have come out of japan

2JZ into my prado went well, alot of the loom for the 1KZ lines up, alternator, starter etc. Only problem was space for the viscous fan, had to go electric. Oh and a 2JZ will bolt straight up to a A343 auto

Re: Carby 1uz
personally I wouldn't want a carby for off road at all. most don't like the angles nothing worse than an engine that dies just when you need it to respond
my question is who has had too fix injection out the bush?. It just dosnt stuff up, that I have seen.....

Re: Carby 1uz
Crank angle sensor on a 1UZ is prone to damage so I always carried a spare one with me.
Never had to use it though.

How do they normally get damaged mate.? is it just from mud and water etc, mines just covered in elec grease to hopfully stop any water getting into it
Re: Carby 1uz
Yeah that's it mostly but anything that flicks up into the engine bay can hit the sensor.
I had mine crap out due to water damage but it was just around town so wasn't a major problem.

Re: Carby 1uz
My mate had his Lexus Hilux shit itself on the way to Thompsons track.
Case of bad wiring but it was fine for 2 years before Cartune Company had to redo it.
It was apparently done by a pro. But when I was younger with the Cortinas and Falcons all you had to do was adjust the idle and mixture and you could get home from anywhere.
Turning up the idle will solve alot of engine problems while you're out there doing it.
