80 Series fuel issues

Post by doddzee »

Hi guys i have an 80 series with a 24v turbo diesel in it and its developed a problem overnight.

It starts and idles but as soon as you hit the gas it splitters and dies. If i pump the fuel primer it will soon fire and run fine. Am i right in assuming that the injector pump is leaking?

This only happens if it is left overnight or for any decent period of time.

If so are the 12v and 24v pump interchangable? Hopefully so as i have a pump in wellington on the old 12v motor i have.

when you pump the primer is it soft and after a few pumps goes hard agen?

i had a issue like this it would fine for a little bit then would die, turns out i had some crap in the tank that kept blocking fuel pick up.

also could be getting air in the system somewhere. is there a puddle under the truck of fuel?
needs more curry

air leak somewhere, check all the joins for tightness and hoses for cracking...maybe

Fairly sure that without a whole lotta modding to the front cover that a 12v pump wont fit :(

Could be a leaking fuel filter housing? stick a one way valve into the fuel line and bypass the filter completely and see if it gets any better

My earlier 80 series did this, but I was told it was normal as there was a bypass in the fuel pump to stop excess pressure :?

hey dude

had this happen to me twice now, about 2 years apart

first time I blew air back down fuel lines from filter and it seemed to work

second time was a bit more of a bitch and a quick blow job wouldn't fix it, so I drained the tank only to find it was spotless, blew all the fuel lines out whilst there was nothing attached and put everything back the way it was and haven't had an issue since.

its still a mystery to me and everyone else that looked at it and I drive it all the time living in fear of the day the problem rears its ugly head again.

when you work out what is wrong with yours I'd be interested to hear.
