Factory Rear Electric diff lock

Post by Ginzu8 »

Hey guys. last week my rear electric diff lock wont engage at all while i was at the local club run. the red light just keep flashing on the dash. when i got home and wash the mud off the car i decide to try it again and it worked both engaging and disengaging..

This weekend I decide to try it again and this time it took a bit longer to engage but then now it wont disengage at all. now i get a solid red light flashing. tried switching the switch to on and off couple of times and tried trying to drive in zigzag to see if its due to loaded pressure..

Anyone have any ideas what i can do or check ?? the 2x 30A fuses looks pretty good so its not that.

Any help would be great

Thanks

Hey dude,

Im not entirely sure if this will help you at all but my 4wd did the same thing wasnt engaging just kept flashing the light at me and beeping.

Turned out the plug needed a clean and the clip to hold it on had snapped off so it had come loose but was connected enough to make a beep and turn the light on.

Thx which end of the plug are you talking about? Also does anyone know if there is a way to manually disengage the diff lock so at least i can drive it to the work shop.. Not too keen todrive it to the mechanics with the diff lock engaged..

Hey yah...

Have a read thru this thread. It will tell you how it works.
If its a factory install.
It has some interlocks which wont let it operate.
1 Going faster than 5 kms hour.
2 When in 2WD
3 Hi Range I think.....Cant remember.

You can override it..By putting power on the appropriate pins. But its easy on the bench... Hard in the truck.

I would suggest checking plugs.
And cycling it.
But you will have to have it in 4wd Low range.

Its a spring loaded splined gear which slides in to lock.
The electric motor powers it in or out by pushing against the spring.
The motor runs and when it compresses the spring stops the motor. Same for the other way.

Have fun

So the factory diff lock doesnt work with 4wd hi range? I am pretty sure i have it engaged in the past with 4wd hi range when i was off roading..

Also i think u forgot to add the link for me to read.. .

Do u know where the electric motor is as i got a feeling the motor might be dead as i had my wife turn the diff lock switch while i was under the car with my ear near the rear diff and heard nothing.

its just to the drivers side of the diff head, where the driveshaft meets the diff.. they are very prone to water and mud, might need removing and cleaning

If you want to unlock manually, pull the motor off, 4 nuts I think. then slide the toothed bar you can see away from the diff head. you may need to jack both wheels off the ground to unlock.
And I would check all the plugs starting at the diff and working back. All the plugs have clips on the side, if you don't push the clip you will struggle to pull them apart.
Good luck

yes they are the ones around the electric motor, two on the bottom and two above I think. then it pulls off forward.

How did you get on? Another way to get it disengaged is to pull the top cover off the elctric motor. Then wind the motor manually.

Just make sure you keep down ward pressure on the motor so it doesn't just wind itself up out of the hole. I reckon have both wheels off the ground for this too.

Another option would be to just drive it and hope you don't have to squeel around too many round abouts. :D

I have pretty much given up and have the truck tow to the mechanics.. I did my shoulder yesterday after going under the truck.. I tried undoing the plug but still no joy and gave up this morning.

You wont need to get it towed to a garage.

You can drive it on tarseal and it wont damage the axle. Yes it will chirp trhe tyres going around tight corners and the steering may seem a little heavier, but that is all.

I had to fix mine at one point. Brushes had got gunged up in the wee electric motor. Took about 1/2 an hour.
I had driven it around town for about a week before this.

Oh real. I was told its not good for the diff with the locker engaged as when u turning the corner on tarseal that it would put too much pressure on the diff itself. anyway the towing tuck was free since i have break down mechanical insurance..

Hopefully by tmr i will know whats wrong and that its a cheap fix.
