Starter motor issues

Post by Filthy4x4 »

Hey guys

After several hours and swear words later i finally got my starter out (not sure how its going back in)

I tested it on a battery and it works fine except its not extending the shaft maybe I didnt hook it up properly?

When it was in the truck it would do the usual click and dim the dash lights and nothing else but now that its out of the truck its spinning fine :?: :?

Did you check all the wiring before you pulled it out?

Mine did that a couple of times and it turned out the bolt clamping the positive terminal had snapped in the middle (where you couldn't see it) so there wasn't enough contact.

Might want to give everything a real good clean and grease and see what happens.

Have you pulled it all apart? It could also just be clay and crap that has gummed up all the contacts.

I didnt really look at the wiring before I took it out. I could barely see anything it was a mish to do anything I couldnt really fit my hands anywhere

Im gonna pull it apart and clean it up while its out. Ive got some neverseize so I will chuck some of that inside to lube it up.

Did you do the 4 by 2 test?
Put your starter motor on the floor
Put your foot on the SM
Hook SM to 12v so its running
Jam a big bit of 4 by 2 in the spining wheel
If it makes like a chainsaw its fine
If it stops spinning you need to fix your starter motor...

At least you know what condition it is in internally now but it grinds your gears when you pull a bastard of a thing off, for what turns out to be no reason

For a start what is your vehicle?
Most Toyotas have a very similar stater anyhow
Is it making a heavy click noise at the starter?
Do the red dash lights go out or if headlights are on do the go very dull when trying to start?
If headlights or dash lights go dull normally batteries or battery connections.
If lights stay good normally the contacts in the starter which is very common. We replace the plunger at the same time but it can usually be reused

Hey Caleb,
I got a battery tester and access to some spare batteries and a shed load of cables, plus I got the kit to make my own.
Let me know if I can help.
Cheers,
Simon.
