Hi guys,
I am planning on doing a wide axle conversion (and IFS hub swap) on my lux this weekend. I need to get it all done in one day if I can so want to make sure I have all the bits I will need.
Wide axle - Has anyone done this without doing a disk brake conversion at the same time? I plan to do it later but won't have time this weekend. I am buying a complete housing with brakes and brake hoses attached.
Will the brake hoses and hand brake cables all fit up? Making brake hoses is not something I will be able to do on the weekend so I will need to sort this during the week if I am going to need to do it.
Anything else I need to know about that won't be a straight bolt up job? Will I need to buy any bots etc?
IFS hub swap - I have read up on this and it doesn't seem to bad. Truck is a ln106 and I have new ln106 rotors for it and new pads. From what I understand....
# Drill the new holes in the rotors to line up with the IFS hubs
# Grind the mounting spacer plate off the guard and remount
# Attach the new rotors to hubs and swap them over. IFS hubs are off a parts truck and wheel bearings seem to be good so I will try to reuse them at this stage. I need to check that the rear seal on the hubs is the thicker of the two types and if not then get replacement seals.
# The flat section of the back surface of the caliper needs 1.5mm taken off it. I don't have a mill and was planning on doing this with a grinder.... Is this a bad idea?
# Tap a thread into the calipers. I take it I will need new bolts as the hole in the caliper will be larger than the original bolt... Anyone know what size this will be so I can check I have the right tap and get the appropriate bolt. Or should I just leave it and get a longer bolt with a nut?
What else do I need to know? Will I need any other bolts etc?
The reason I am so rushed with this is that I am now living/working in Queenstown and the truck is in Chch with no warrent. I am going to Chch Friday night and need to fix the truck and get a warrent over the weekend and hopefully drive back Sunday night or Monday morning. If I need to I can take Monday off work but it is a last resort.
To get a warrent from what I can see is that it needs new front brakes (which I have) and new rear axle seals which have been leaking. I was planning on doing the conversions soon so thought I could kill two birds with one stone.
Are the calipers off a ln130 surf different? My parts truck is down here in Qtwn so if they would work I could grind them down this week to save a little time (not much I know but every bit helps).
The other option is to just swap all the brakes over and put new axle seals in if I am not going to get it all done in time but I would rather give it a go if I can get all the gear together.
Cheers,
Pete
The more I think about this the more it looks like I will not have time for all of this...anyone in chch who knows what they are doing want to give me a hand!
Hilux wide axle conversion and IFS hub swap
Re: Hilux wide axle conversion and IFS hub swap
pm deranged engineering he did it to my truck
i used FJ40 Vented Disc with ifs hilux hubs and calipers, drilled the thread out of the calipers and put bolts through to the knuckle housing mount, also had to re drill the calipers to suit the ifs hubs

SASed Isuzu Mu - hilux diffs, Rears up front, disc brake conversion, ifs hub swap, crossover steering, and legal!!!!
Re: Hilux wide axle conversion and IFS hub swap
Slight change of plans to take some pressure off. I have organised to cope without a car next week (car pool to work!) and booked some flights so I will have two days this weekend and and one day next weekend to get things sorted
Should make life a bit easier!
Questions are still the same.

Pete

Handbrake cable will not work. The wide axle one os 70mm longer accross the housing. I had to shortern a wide one to make it fit the narrow hilux axle in my Zuk. Wide ones for the most part are floor lever too, (I think early 96ish SR5s had the wide axle and umbrella handle)
Toy - Zuk chassis tub, hilux 4.88 axles and transfer, Nissan CA18DE motor and auto trans, sc12 supercharger, 32 10'5 simex, twin motor 8274 custom freespool. Well the parts are all there in various corners of the shed

Re: Hilux wide axle conversion and IFS hub swap
as above the handbrake cable will not reach but you can extend it with a couple of bits of small chain or similar if you want to make it work until you can get one made. You will only need to have the small side extended if you move the long side bracket sideways by 70mm.
Does the new axle come with the steel lines attached? if you it will all join up at the break bypass valve (or ditch the valve and go for a straight joiner) you will need to test full drop if you use the bypass valve but it will work to drive round town etc and you can add a longer hose/joiner at a later date.
Its a couple of years since i changed mine and did go to disks but i think thats correct.

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!

Just re read the post, if all you need onthe front is new brakes to get it going, the pads are the same so your new ones should fit, even if just temporarily, yeah rough disks will chew them out quicker but it will get you mobile

Cheers guys. Will try to get the wide handbrake cable too and see if I can make it work. And yip it come with steel brake lines on the diff.
Unless there is anything else that makes the rear sound not too bad.
The front needs new rotors and pads. Rotors have a massive lip on them and something is making a nice grinding noise when on the brakes! So its all coming off any way and now i have a little more time I may as well go for the IFS swap. Will the existing brake hoses on the front be ok or will I need to get longer ones made up?
Cheers,
Pete
