gutless 5LE

Post by skux »

I HAVE A HILUX WITH THE 5LE MOTOR.

its slow/gutless and eats feul. Im told thats just the motor but im getting sick of it, I have to chop atleast 2 gears coming up hills.

Im looking at turboeing it, Im thinking ill need a chip to do so?

Also can anyway get hold of these chips at a decent price?

Thanks 8)

Seems like a turbo is the way to go!! It worked for me!!
just fit the turbo kit and worry about the chip later..

Mine Is a 5L non efi (5L-t)
turbocharging without the chip will not hurt it at all. When I first did mine i didn't fuel it up at all and drove round for a few weeks, was mint, I only increased the fuel to add more power.

Sweet just running low boost? Im finding it that hard to get a chip at a decent price i almost want to turbo it and just run it with no chip haha!

It just needs that bit more grunt.

What sort of condition is the engine in? I had one in a 2wd ute that I drove all over the country with 1000kg's of test weights in the back. It went really well. Wanting more power is one thing but accepting its a truck and it's heavy and you'll always have to "chop" gears is another thing. People with turbo's that keep the foot on the floor and don't change down usually find themselves cracking heads, ever tried that with a egt gauge? keeping the foot flat instead of changing down usually sky rockets the temps. I would be having a good look at the motor eg, compression and leak down to first of all see if there is another problem that makes yours gutless and secondly finding out how tired the motor is, if its looking pretty worn and you throw a turbo at it, your trusty old slow motor will probably blow to bits..

just my 5c

hay mate, motor is awesome cond, always serviced. Has 2nd motor put in out of a low k ute done through old man's work!

No problems there.

Its a standard 4x4 with 5LE with 32's.

I chucked a trailer on it to pick up a van and with out the van on there we could do max 80k flat road, with van im talking 60-70k in 4th on flat. up hill is a joke, My old 2.8 towed and went better im sure!

I know how good these 5L motors go as i did have a turbo 5l not 5le hiace that towed a trailer and car at 90-115k no problems at all.

Get a 2lt injector pump and tubo (preferably a non efi injector pump, that way u loose the efi so its better around water and can set the fuel better for the more power you want. I have a 3ltr 1kz surf and a mate has a 01 hilux with these mods and running 16psi boost im 14psi(cut out on efi) and he waste my ass, even with his dailed down to 14 he still got more go.

Also 3inch exhaust and a high flow muffler will help, and also if you have spare coin a intercooler, fornt or top mount

Did he do the mods to his himself?

Yeah 3inch will be done at time, and intercooler also .

The turbo was a 2lte, thibk they ct26, they handle a fair bit of boost and the 5l is a strong motor, i think he cut up the manifold and put a manifold for turbo to bolt onto.

I have a feeling you can get all the manifolds off autobend and make it allcustom if its easier.

There is no need to change the 5L pump. Just put a 2lt top on it
