Doug O'Callahan at Photo and Frame in West End used to be the contact, might be worth trying to get hold of him

Good rock crawling up the Hapuku. See if you can make it to the waterfalls. Dave will remember a certain trip up the Kowai, lost his rear diff plug. We found it in the end and got him out. Both rivers are not for the faint hearted or shiny's though. The river down near Oaro, Kahatura I think, will bring you out on the inland road. That's not a bad easy little trip.

Had a great time, but as Al mentioned, trip was cut short due to my mechanic only doing the plug up finger tight

Nice area down there, get to know the locals and you will see areas very few would get the chance.

Hey man,

I've recently moved up to Picton. Haven't had a chance to do much other than tiki touring yet but Kaikoura ain't far away so if you find any spots give us a yell as I'd be keen on some exploring or an over nighter somewhere.

I work pretty much everyday but given notice I can make weekends or weekdays.

Going to join the Marlborough club here as well but won't have much a chance to do many trips with them till later in the year.

About half an hour south of Kaikoura. It is a river.

From Waiau drive for about half hour, you get to Conway river. You get into river from Kiakoura side of bridge. Head down stream, it brings you out on the main highway. Good little river trip especially after flooding when she's soft. Two good camp areas halfway down as well, one has a long drop. River can get swift and deep after rain and snowmelt :D

Re Clarence Reserve; DOC only open the road maybe 4 times per year, any other time you need to cotact the land owner who will give you the combination for the lock, at a cost $$$$$$$

the conway also has animas running around to shoot at

if anyone up that way is keen, drive up to mt lyford skifield, park by the ice skating lake, head straight up the hill there, and drop in iver the back..

theres a 14 pointer hiding out in that valley..
ive seen it, was a beast n a half...

you can walk out down to the inland rd from there, itll take about 2 hours i guess..i was doing bait lines along the main ridge down to the river, headed up the side track that goes to the farmers place and there it was....

thats if your a keen hunter...

pretty sure the top part is down to the river, then theres the farmers paddocks...

cant remember the guys name..we stayed in his farm house for a few months while we were working the inland rd area..the other side of the rd from the whalesback was over flowing with pigs...

we were working on the farm on the waiau side of the conway bridge(east side of the inland rd)..saw a heap of pigs and a few reds....we ate well at that place
