kzj78 series front hubs

Post by pradon35s »

I have a kzj78 1993 prado, it has the ln65 manual hub conversion and I know the kzj front wheel bearing kits are the same as ln65 ones.. so does that mean I can use the ln65 hubs/disc assembly on my kzj78 diff housing/ stub axles

when I put 106 hubs & stubs on mine, I used the 106 discs, worked fine with the prado calipers

So you guys went Hilux for your hubs.
I went the other way and went 60 series or were they early 70 series....Cant remember...
I didn't change my stub axles.
All fitted good, Bearings ran in the same place.
I resued the wheel bearing lock nut , only had to machine it down a little. So it stayed factory Prado for the nut retention plate. Easier than those tab washers.
I did swap discs as I wanted new ones and start off fresh.

Hey I'm looking at doing this conversion, was wondering if the ln130 setup is the same as the kzn130? And can it be used with out too much change? Cheers

Should be yes, is an easy change. The only thing we didn't have was the nut and locking thing for the lux stub axles. There should be a post about what I did somewhere on here.

Cool thanks wjw. Had a good read of your post, looks very informative. I might just try use what i have for those locking tab things. Do you have to cut them down much? Cheers

went to the local wreckers today and brought some LN130 hilux front hubs.. am now sitting in my workshop thinking wtf is going on?!!

I think the wrecker has given me ln130 surf front hubs?? hoping someone can confirm this please..

the length is far too short for a start, there would be no where near enough thread on the stub axle to adjust the wheel bearings and where the hub seal seats is further out meaning the disc would sit out further meaning my calipers don't work..

closest isy new one, furtherest is my old kzj one

Image

notice it doesn't go out further than the wheel studs..

Ok so i finally got around to doing this hub swap. Got the ln106 hubs, took the good bearings out of my hub and put them into the ln106 hub with the ln106 discs and reassembled. Put the assembly back onto the axle and did the preload nut up on the bearings. Went to put the locking nut on and realised there was no thread left. Did a measure up and found that on the ln106 hubs the bearings run 10mm further apart then on my prado hubs. Did you guys encounter this? If so what did you do?

How much thread is sticking out?

When I put the wheel bearing adjusting nut on the nut over hangs the end of thread by about 2mm or so. With my prado hubs there was about 7mm or so from memory.

If you have a lathe you can machine the inner face of the Prado nut ie; the part that the seal runs on , untill you have only the threaded part left, the steel is very tough .

Ah yip thats an idea. No body mentioned anything about machining those parts in any of these hub swap posts. Was just wondering if there are any hubs that have the bearings running in the same place?

Most swaps are hubs and there correct stub axles, I have done the machineing trick myself but the latheing took a long time because of the hardness of the nut.

I did the same to the nut / s on mine when I changed hubs. From Memory they were 60 series hubs.
Or possibly early 70.....Cant remember now. Did that a few years back.

Cool thanks guys. Looks like im gona have to do that too. I measured up i need to take about 10mm off the tightening nut. Which results in the thread starting very close to where the nut face contacts the bearing. Im guessing this has not caused you guys any problems with wheel bearings coming loose or wearing out or anything? Cheers.
