1kz-te problem
1kz-te problem
Hi guys
Just having a few issues with my 1kz-te engine and wondered if anyone could help, it is running really rough when it idles at about 750rpm but clears by about 1100rpm, it puffs quite a bit of blue smoke when its running rough, its not hard to start, any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Re: 1kz-te problem
low compression? blocked injectors? injector pump? thats what id be looking at for a start. Blue smoke is burnt oil correct? (im sure someone will correct me if im wrong

Re: 1kz-te problem
You haven't just done an oil change and over filled it?
Re: 1kz-te problem
Havent done a compression test but that is next on the list. Correct blue smoke is burnt oil which points me away from the fuel system. and no the oil hasnt been over filled. Im starting to think along the lines of a cracked ring or something like that? do these engines ever have any problems with valve guides cracking? bending rods?
cheers

iv only heard of them cracking heads.
get a leak down test done, would be better then just a compression test
Re: 1kz-te problem
I had similar problem but without the smoke when the main idler bolt sheered off. Only way I found out I had a problem was after dropping the sump off and finding main idler gear teeth in bottom of it.
when motor was revving above 1000rpm engine ran fine on idle ran like it a petrol on 3 cylinders.
Good luck.

Re: 1kz-te problem
its already had the head replaced with a genuine toyota one. Yep i will do a leak down if i can get a hold of the equipment. Thanks divebrent i will look into that.
Re: 1kz-te problem
My old man had the same problem with a prado (97) a few years ago. Compression was 400 200 200 90... leaking round the rings. Still went pretty well but would miss when idling and used a fair bit of oil!
Hopefully that isn't your problem but a compression and leak down test would be first on my list.
Cheers,
Pete

Re: 1kz-te problem
hi guys
just done a compression test over the weekend and they are all around 450 to 500psi which suggests its not the rings unless the oil ring has gone and not the compression ring which is pretty unlikely. so any other ideas anyone?
cheers

Re: 1kz-te problem
Could be a Crook ECU ...see if you can borrow a known good one & swap to see if it makes a difference.

Ok i will see if i can get a hold of one, but do you think ECU fault would cause blue smoke? being fuel i would have expected black smoke
cheers

Re: 1kz-te problem
Try asking the same question on that other forum too, someone else might have had the same issue. Blue smoke could be turbos seals also? but that probably wouldn't explain the bad idle?

Re: 1kz-te problem
Its interesting, you do get a blue smoke from over fueling/poor atomisation when the engines cold.
Have you ever followed an 80 series Landcruiser around in low range when its cold??
Here's a couple of good 80 series cruisers (mine up front, NZhunters 1JZ Hilux and Dixies 80 series) on a cold morning, about 10 mins into the drive from being parked at camp over night.

The blue smoke was fixed in mine after the injectors were overhauled.
Badnuz had a similar scenario, he even had his engine overhauled chasing the blue smoke at idle. Had injector work done, problem solved.
So I'm gonna say that another possibility is you have a crook injector or two that's not popping off correctly at idle, but once things speed up, its ok.
You can try cracking the injector lines off at the injectors one at a time. A bit like pulling spark plug leads on a petrol, only on a diesel its a bit more dangerous. Stay the hell away from the high pressure fuel which will squirt out.
If the cracked line makes no difference to the lumpy idle, you know which cylinder to start looking at.
Have you taken it down the road and thrashed the living crap out of it on the red line in 2nd gear for a bit?? Worth a shot eh

Re: 1kz-te problem
How many km's has the engine done?
Re: 1kz-te problem
Check that the egr valve by the throttle body isnt stuck, My mates one had the exact symptoms as yours - valve was stuck and when operated by hand fixed it immediately. Replaced valve and all sorted
Re: 1kz-te problem
Ok thanks for the help i will look into that as soon as i have time.
