Surf 1996

Post by hamishcollins »

Hey Guys hows it going? Pretty new around here... Just thought id join up to get some knowledge off you more experienced guys! :)

I got a 1996 hilux surf a few months ago haven't done much too it really got a new set off steel rims, a 2" suspension lift and a new muffler in the exhaust to make it flow a bit better... Was wondering what other kind of thing i should be looking into to getting for it?

Its just my daily driver but enjoy going out in the weekends and tackling a bit of mud...

Cheers Guys!

Hey dude welcome to the site, as for experienced dudes, I'm not your man lol but can say that the 33" muds I added to mine made a huge difference. Your location would be a good addition too :D

I did the 2" suspension lift first mate, and that enabled me to get the 33"s on as you should be able to. Then I had to do a 2" body lift as the tyres were scraping on hard lock. (As I was informed they would). Top gear is now lower on revs than I'd like now, about 2000rpm@100kmph, and fuel (diesel) consumption is 20% higher as well. I could fang about with diff heads I'm told but for what I need this will do for now and I'm cool with this as the benefits outweigh the negs.

His truck is newer shape than yours so cant compare lifts as much. Mates got 3 inch suspension and 2.25 body lift to clear 285-75 which are 33s. Next get a snorkel before you drown it !

Hey there, Yea mine is the newer shape (third generation?) but a really nice truck you have there my brothers got one the same! Ive got blaktrac's on my truck as well they look mean :) .

With body lifts what is the deal with them getting certed? When i got suspension lift done the guy warned me of issues getting the body lifted because of cert issues...?

Yea next thing on the list was getting a snorkel. I was also thinking of just getting a straight through 2.5" or 3" have any of you guys done this? What would you recommend and did you get any noticeably better mileage / better flow? With bigger exhausts did you have to look into better intakes?

Cheers your replies guys!

Body lifts do have to get cert. 32 will be ample on a truck like yous although it on 16s so 265-75 are best beat.
I had 3 inch straight through on mine from turbo dump pipe, went noticably beter than my mates with 2.5 straiight through.

Ok cheers for that. I was told that was the best fit as well.

Dont suppose you know if he needed to upgrade intakes with the 3"?
