for 15k id buy a double cab 2000+ hilux, throw all the gear in the tray and get a canopy on the top and youd be set, plus you wudnt have fish all through the inside of your truck and they look damn good too! (i am toyota biased) but if you are using it for mainly road dutys i would definately pick the surf, have driven one before and it hauled compared to my mates terrano.

I think you'd be okay with the challenger. I think they have the same running gear as the pajeros so ar nice and strong. Keeping regular services with good quality oil is most important though.
Maybe if your considering going out by yourself esp in sand, you could look at getting a electric winch fitted. May never need it but is a piece of mind if driving home on the sand at night.just thought

For rust, my crazy science teacher back in the day tried to tell me this! "bare some chassis, and bolt some big lumps of zinc to it"

HE was an idiot.

That does work to a degree, ever heard on an aneroid?

It works for boats. Not really for cars.

JPGee, why a petrol? Diesel engines are a perfect design for 4x4's. Their low down torque and flat torque curve give the best usable power for these 2+ tonne beasts.

Yeah thats the one, couldnt think of it at the time, been years since i pissed around with them.

Sorry, didn't see this post last time. So you have used this? Did it protect your chassis? I wouldn't have thought it'd do much for the rest of the body, but I guess the chassis might benefit?

Petrol vs Diesel: I hear the argument about torque. I dont know if I will be testing the vehicle as if I was a fulltime 4WD bod. I want to get to some hairy fishing spots. But these probably pale in comparison to the Hardcore 4wd spots you all regard as testing.Cost wise i understand with RUC there is little by wau of savings. If wrong feel free to lambast and point out where I am wrong. Note: Disconnecting the ODO to get around this stands no ground with me! 8) Also; i havent run a diesel vehicle since I was little and know too little. i guess the learning curve and comfort zone aspect prvent me from serious considering this option.

Winch: Not a bad idea. i am pretty risk averse so wont be travelling alone at all. But this cld be a good way to ensure I do get home always.

Hilux surf: Probably not as "carlike"enough to attract my dearly beloved. Also; I am a pussy. I like a car type ride and this will be our primary (only) vehicle. So better road noise insulation. Creature comforts etc will win out.

Regarding the Anode process: Has anyone else another option on this?
I saw 4X4's in Surfers last week up and down the beach (Surflifesaving vehicles) so a treatment must be avaialbe: Does anyone have any experience/opinions about these?

Again; many thanks all that have answered and helped me form a better picture on this.
As time goes by I am more inclined to think it is the challenger over any thing else.
But open minded I remain

aussies are into 'electronic rust protection' things at the moment. might be black magic but still worth a look.
surfs are very carlike IMO, so don't discount them.
