Murawai Beach with FJC Magazine - Sat 17 December

Post by shane4x4 »

Hi everyone!
We'll be touring NZ in December for FJC Magazine (http://www.fjc-mag.com), and the final trip before we leave will be to Murawai Beach (as suggested by MNC - thanks!)

We want to invite anyone & everyone to come join us for this run, as well as a 'guide' to tell us where to go, when to meet, things like that.

See this thread for details on meeting place & time once we get it figured out.

It looks like it will be a really fun trip :)

FYI, you can get more info about our trip here: http://www.kiwitour11.com

Hi Shane,

I have had a look at your site and as you are running this as a commercial venture then you are unable to advertise in these forums unless you become a site vendor. Vendors and site supporters help keep the site alive. As you are from America and this this seems to be a one off venture then I will allow you to advertise your trips, website and thus sponsors if you do something directly for the members on here - provide a bbq lunch on any trips your organise (kiwi tradition, couple of sausages, some onion and watties tomato sauce on a slice of bread) for any offroadexpress members that come along

I like the idea of a bbq

I haven't been up the beach in ages (but am keen to tag along). Anyone out there willing to be the trip leader?

I see that the high tide is 3:30pm in the afternoon so a morning trip might be best.

Guess it couldn't hurt to through out a proposal...

Meet at say 9:00am at the Rimmer Road turn off (Cnr Rimmer rd & SH16, Helensville),

Drive through the cut out (haven't been through in ages - is it still all good?)

Play up the beach for a couple of hours then back out by 12pm for a bbq lunch...

Feel free to through out any suggestions people may have.

One may be a play at the 4x4 park and bbq there. Details of how to get there:

Sounds like a good idea.
If I can get the bits spread across the garage floor bolted together in time I'll be in.

If you can send me sponsorship information to shane@fjc-mag.com, I'm certainly interested in looking into it. As far as BBQ - I'm definitely good with that as long as 100 people don't show up ;) That could blow my small budget :)

We'll definitely do something though - we have a few weeks to figure it out.

That sounds like a good plan to me. The jeep park would be OK, but if we can do the beach that'd be perfect :)

No chance, sometimes you might only get 2-5 trucks showing up - these generally are the best trips by a long shot. Down canterbury you might get up to 20 trucks on the river trips and so with those numbers others definitely have to contribute to sausages  If anything it gets everyone round the bbq babbling away

I don't think it will be for toyotas only, after all toyotas need to live up to "pissing on a nissan"

As for the gold membership thing, I saw that as well and ummm yeah I didnt buy, push or do anything and ore just appeared there, perhaps for using the forums to organise the trips and link to any articles he writes etc. who knows how that stuff all works, I just try to keep these forums working and thats the only thing I pursue 8)

So who is signing up to be the guide / trip leader for this?

I haven't been up the beach in ages (truck hasn't been running in last 2 years )

Keen to get up there, I'm just not familiar with the best play areas...

I've been informed that Murawai beach, while technically open, is officially not opened for driving unless special permission is granted.

Looks like we'll be finding another location for this run...I'll let everyone know what we figure out. Suggestions are welcome :)

Murawai Beach is open to vehicles.

Whoever you were talking to would be referring to the Bombing Range which is closed to the public. You dont need to go into the Bombing Range to do a beach trip up Murawai.

Doesn't look like anyone is putting there hand up to be the trip leader anyway.

Why not try the Woodhill 4x4 park?

hay Big Al i havent jumped into this trip just yet as its so close to xmas but the way things are looking i may be able to swing this trip in.
regards the trip leader thing its only but a name because as the beach is a public road every body needs to follow the road rules etc.
im pipeing up now as i would not like to see this event fall over due to lack of interest

i was thinking the same thing, i have no particular interest in being a trip leader, i just love Muriwai and would be willing to take some responsibility if it makes sure the trip happen.

Cheers dude. I only ask cause the last time I went on the beach the cut out was up by the motor cross park and I understand that this is no longer accessible. Apparently the cut out is now down by the ocean beach park on Rimmers road? (yes its been along time for me).

I didn't want to be responsible for showing our overseas friends around when its been so long since I've done this myself.

Sounds like a good crew is starting to form - I'm keen come along and try my truck out in the dunes. Its not much good over 50kms p/hr hope that's ok? (dont want to hold you guys back too much).

What do you reckon about my original suggestions re meeting time and place?

Looking forward to finally going on a run with you dude

Directions from the Tron - 1. Drive up SH1 to Aucks, 2. Turn Left onto Norwestern Motorway and follow SH16 until just before you get to Helensville, Turn left on Rimmers road just before Helensville

We are not going onto the beach at the Murawai Township. We'll go though the cut out not far from the Woodhill 4x4 park.

If we meet at the start of Rimmers road you will have no problem finding your way. 8)

Why not start at Muriwai and drive up from there?

How far north do you expect to go?

Road regulations and rules apply and there is a speed limit for driving on the beach so your limited speed will be OK. Driving the Muriwai sand dunes is probably not the best thing to do publicly, espcially with international media present.

I agree 9am is a good meeting time.

Meeting at the surf club end may be a good idea? Rimmers road is already 1/2 way up the beach, so starting at the surf club will give us more time behind on the wheel on the sand. (and closer for auckland / south people)

There is a legal road (to the best of my knowledge) that goes through the forest a few kms short of the end of the beach. I think we should go for a drive along that, its a fun little track. I wont name it, but most of you will know the one i mean.

here is a little video with some photos when i took a few guys up a couple years back.

So in summary? Meet 9am on Coast Road, Muriwai. (at the little horse area carpark area on gravel road) head up beach, go for play on 4wd track, drive down beach, back to carpark by 1pm.

That sounds like a pretty good plan to me :) Just want to be sure we're always on legal tracks ;)
