Hilux power steering problem

Post by jagni401 »

Gidday guys,
I am hoping that you can shed some light on a problem I am experiencing in my ute. Its a leaf sprung 85 lux, and when the truck is going, but not moving, when I turn the wheel the power steering sort of judders. Like its working and then not working. The power steering is'nt overly great at the best of times. Its fine when the ute is moving. It only occurs when the resistance is increased ie. sitting still or in low 4x4 boulder hopping.

Cheers

I would check the idler arm for play for a starting point...
Then check all steering joints.
easiest to climb underneath and have a good look at everything whilst a helper is moving the steering wheel.
oviously just make shure its in park and brake on whilst your underneath.
hope this helps. :)

not sure why you would want to look for play in joints when your describing a weakness in the power of the power steering. presume you have checked fluid level. steering pump belt tight? any noise from the steering pump. any movement in the pully going in to the pump? oil leak from pump or steering box. could be an issue in the box but I doubt it. most likely be the pump. pumps die a lot more often than the box.
jump under the bonnet when it is doing the shuddering and feel the pump will propably feel it pulseng

Haha cheers guys, will look into it. I did check the fluid the other day, and it was topped up fine.
