Patrol winch

Post by Rangerat »

I can get hold of a Patrol winch for a good price but have some questions.
1. Are they any good?
2. Will it mount into a ARB winch bar (steel) with no mods?
and as it is 24V and I am looking at putting it into a Rangie, can anybody see any problems with running a seperate 24V system. 24V high output alternater, battery, wireing etc...

What are you planning to use the winch for?

Just recreational recovery?

From memory the Nissan PTO will only mount on an ARB bar with some welding and cutting. Alan Donaldson in the CCVC runs that combination winch and bar and it took some fabrication to fit it

Oh yeah his one is a PTO not a electric I think. If you're going electric an 8274 would be a lot faster...

Lowbox you must have been up all night with that new baby :D .....

I don't think he has a 24V PTO.... so what was all the PTO shite about????

Aren't the Nissan 24V winches just Warn low mounts or are they actually a Nissan product?

PS. I hear he has bagged it anyway - which is prolly just as well or Lowbox would be helping you fit a driveshaft to it

Bodge, time you went and did some work instead of hanging round boards all day... all I was saying was that the only Nissan winch/ARB bar combo I can remember was a PTO one - and if it is a lowmount electric, then it will be about as fast as the bodge in water, which is the definition of slow...unless it's being towed behind the 90!

Now where's that finger emoticon when you need it?

Lowbox ever since you got pregnant you been really hormonal... All over the place - you can turn at any moment - I am staying clear of your finger....

Rangerat - If you haven't sorted out a winch yet - you should seriously consider an 8274 - there was a very new looking second hand one going for $2000 at the 4WD show - which sounds a lot but that $1000 off!!!

If you need to go cheap you can do like Lowbox and cruise the shopping mall carpark leaving notes on the windows of Jap imports. You should be able to pick up a low mount warn for cheap from someone who doesn't use it. The obvious ones are the ones without cable - taken off by MAF when the come in and never replaced because they don't intend on using it.... 12V will be easier - which means staying away from the Patrols....

Bodge, Lowbox

Cheers for your advice. I'll look at a winch once the Rangie is back in one piece.

I don't suspose you have any pics of the way the deck was mounted on those aussi flatdecks?
I have a plan in my head just to attach it to the two rear body supports. (2 brackets fore and aft of the coil spring)

Speaking of winches, have you thought about going hydraulic? you can winch all day and all week 8O

http://www.4wdworld.com.au/products/max ... icunit.htm

I'm looking at this for my old landy, since I'm not running 35's, no lockers, no coils and so would be winching 10 times more than anyone else!!!!!

And I think it comes to about the same price as an electric if you know the right people

Mike

I priced up a hydraulic Milemarker which was around $3500 plus a new high out put power steer pump $1000 so it was getting up there.
I lake the look of the pump mounted on the transfer case but still think it would be fairly pricey.
All round I would like Hyd but it's cost that puts me off.
As you say if you know the right people it may come down a bit.
When I get round to the winch stage I'll give it more thought.

Rangerat,

Unfortunately no I don't have any close ups of the tray mounts... partly the reason why I am watching your build up with interest :D

I was kicking myself because it wasn't until after the event that I wanted to tray the Rangie and I had missed my opportunity to take detaied photos.

From what I can remember they did use the existing mounts and also incorporated new ones. The silver rangie has a shortened chassis like yours and he had fabbed a new rear crossmember with mounting points. I think both had also made extra mounting behind the cab off the mid crossmember. Both had roll bars so mounts at this end were beefy.

I would suggest checking out tray variants of GU patrols and Hiluxes. The style of mount is common and they are easy to oggle in sales yards and carparks.... The distribution and quantity will be important for spreading any load on the tray....

Good luck - I will sit back and watch to see how you get on :D I am definitely not starting mine until you have finished.... 8)
