Help with 1kz cutting out
Help with 1kz cutting out
Hi guys having issues with the 1kz in my kzj78. has developed a fault. is cutting out then not starting then will start for short periods, think it could be the fuel cutoff solenoid, but also found a slight weep at priming pump.(got a new one from a wrecker).
Can someone tell me what voltage should be at the solenoid, only have 1.8 volts, seems a bit low.
Any ideas what could cause this?
Also any other causes would be helpful.
Thanks
Mike

Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
The Cut off solenoid does two things, cuts fuel but also modulates fuel (spill valve)
So it see's variable voltages....
I will take a guess and say the ECU capacitors are on the way out....
Common problem, pull the ecu and open her up....Easy to do.
And see if any caps have popped or leaked....
There is a guy in Nelson who is a whizz at repairing ecu's
Give me a call at home...PM sent.

Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
ECU looks fine, now will run but misses like fuel cutting on and off. Should it be real oily in the air intake around the MAP sensor? This has me stumped.

Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
The long looking sensor in the air cleaner is an air temp probe. (pushes into a grommet)
Map sensor is on the intake manifold side, small black block with vac line to it.
Its bolted to manifold.
Above the fuel pump.
These engine are oily.....crankcase vents into intake on turbo....
Thats why they gum up.
You may have a build up and its pushed oil into the vac lines and is blocking up the MAP senor.
I am home all day so don't mind another phone call.

still working trying to find the fault, when it cuts out the fuel cut off solenoid is clicking multiple time and fast as well, any idea what would cause this?

Yeah well mines playin up also.Over fueling... I fitted a boost cut defender but its stuffed either the ECU or Map sensor..
Got used sensor coming....
Might be an excuse to go manual pump !

Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
Think I've got it sorted, ECU came back from repair in Nelson, $200 with warranty, can't beat that. Is running good, will go for a good drive soon.
Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
Thats good news...
Think I fixed mine too, replaced sensor, cleared old error codes...
No new ones....
However have the manual pump in the back of my mind...
Purchased a used 2LT pump for the donor...
And looking for a 1KZTE pump going or not...for the rest of the bits.

Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
Hmmm all makes interesting reading.
I have a similar story with mine.
Have not driven the truck much over the last year as I had a work vehicle. Started the truck 2 months ago and hard to start. Would fire up and then shut off after about 12 revs or so. Big cloud of smoke - dark.
3rd or 4th attempt would start and then be all ok.
Next time a few days later took 10 attempts or so. Then really hard to start. Then a couple of days of easy to start....
I was doing some work for a WOF on it the other day and had it idling. Stopped several times like this. I then went to move truck and no luck at all at starting other than those first few revs.. The usual big cloud of fumes every time it died.
I went looking and for the first time have seen that it has used some radiator water. Took 1 litre to fill up. Errr!
Took it to Scott at Diesel Pumps. He initially though he had found the cause with the vacuum diaphragm that controls the wee butterfly within the main throttle butterfly. Used for starting and controlling a clean shut off. There were no codes showing on the ECU. Scott says it is massively over fuelling but thinks he has got it, though not sure of true symptoms.
I turned up. We had it running and it shut off again on idle! By this time he had replaced the fuel filter too.
He then decided to check other stuff out and to then replace the spill valve. For other reasons of mine, he put a second hand 2L-TE spill valve in which he has had cheap success with in the past. He was not promising anything, however fault had gone so he did not know where else to look.
All good for a day and then back to it's old tricks again.
This time I noticed it took a 2nd go to start. Then when driving along the road it would suddenly rev and then stall out. Big cloud again when revving. Happened several times. Has not done this on the road before. Nor when dying at idle. Next she died again and no way she was going to fire up and stay going. Grrrr.
Towed into a car park and left for several hours. Went back after a meeting to tow it and I thought, what the hell might as well try starting. It went!! Lots of smoke as I drove off and up the road for a bit. Then seemed to clean up a wee bit, truck running fine!
Fuelled up a bit a garage as was just down at the level where the fuel light comes on. Wanted to confirm that it is not an issue with fuel being picked up. Drove off from garage and noticed in my mates lights from behind me that I was still dumping smoke on the big accelerate.
Any ideas anyone? Love to have some of that great Toyota reliability back!

Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
sounds like an issue I have heard about on boats that have been sitting not used much, that is fuel bug, clogs all the fuel lines and filter, looks like slime in the lines, could be worth a look. Mine had no issues like yours, it either ran fine or not at all.
Good luck
Good luck

Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
Yeah I had been wondering about fuel bug. Scott said the filter looked dirty and I asked him about a bug. He did not seem to think so. More like dirty fuel from dust or maybe from a Jerry can that was dirty.
I need to get this sorted soon as I don't have a work ute any more. I had enough of cycling earlier in the year when the Doc told me I couldna drive for a while.

Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
Looking at swapping out the diesel pump and or ECU.
Got a 2nd hand 1kz pump today for 3 hundy.
Does anyone know what the correct numbers are for a manual trans -71 or -78 Prado ECU?
Also will a manual trans Surf / Hilux ECU work in a -7x series Prado?
Seems Prado ECU's are like rocking horse poo these days. Even more so the manual ones.
Also does anyone have a good spare they could loan me to attempt to eliminate the issue?
Gotta get this sorted tomorrow so that I can use the vehicle!!
Cheers Johnno

Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
Toyodiy.com says
89661-60230 (05/1993 - 03/1994)
89661-60231 (04/1994 - 03/1996
Not sure if other 1KZTE ECU's will work.
There is a guy in Nelson who repaires those ECU's

Thanks Calvin
Had a look on there, most useful.
So those numbers above are for the manual trans Prados.
KZN185 man tran is 89661 - 3D230
185 intercooled is - 3D260
KZN130 Man Tran is 89661 - 3D090 for 93 94
94 95 is -3D091
KZJ90 89661- 60510
Hmm will a KZN130 (-3D090) work in my Prado?
I have managed to locate one of these.

Came up with error code 24 "Intake Temperature Sensor"
Have swapped out ECU..will now start if i floor the accellerator ..took it for a drive was going ok for a few mins then lost power & wouldnt seem to rev...no error codes came up at all .
Anyone any ideas ???
I need to get it sorted as am taking son away on 27th for holiday.

Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
Couriered my ECU off here; http://www.anythingelectronic.co.nz/front.asp
this morning. Says he will work on it Weds or Thurs, next week.
Maybe you need to do the same.
He does 3 of these ECUs a week. say 93/4 is about the right age (time from manufacture) for them to fail.
Cheers for posting the link again Calvin.

Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
Happy to help....
Yes mines overdue.......
But its been running hot / rich the last few times out.
They say they last about 10 years then the caps go.
Hence the manual pump option for me.....

Think ive found my problem ...there is a cable that goes to auto trans (prob kick down) that is attached beside where the accellerator cable attaches ...it was sticking & not going fully back when foot was off gas ...i sprayed some CRC down it & now it moves freely ...my prob has now gone away (for now anyway )

Re: Help with 1kz cutting out
Well the bad news was that the Saturday courier drop off I organised last Friday for my ECU getting to http://www.anythingelectronic.co.nz/front.asp did not happen.
The good news is that they got it this morning, and have worked on it today - was badly corroded and arcing out. Lots of bits sorted/ worked on by the sounds of it. It is now back in the hands of the courier and I will see it tomorrow morning.
Awesome service. Big ups to http://www.anythingelectronic.co.nz/front.asp

I haven't been far yet, but I do now have a WOF and no issues so far
Also we changed back to my Spill Valve from the 2lt one.
