which turbo for a 5l?

Post by Petemcc »

I have a 5l (3 litre non turbo) diesel in my hilux and seems as I'm doing a few mods I figure I may as well turbo it before cert. At this stage I don't want to run high boost as the motor could do with a bit of freshen up; just want it to say turbo on the cert plate so I can play with it later.

Was originally planning to put a turbo "kit" of a 2.4 surf and then put a bigger one on in a couple of years when I have given the motor a birthday. However they are seeming harder to come buy with hardly any on trademe so I have been thinking of a few other options.

Can any one suggest a good turbo that could go on it? Was thinking either one off a bighorn/mu or a terrano or 1kz surf. Any thoughts? Pros and cons...and anyone got anything lying around?

Some of the turbos I have seen don't have waste gates on them what do people normally do? Fit an external one or find a turbo that has one on it?

Any advice appreciated.

Cheers,
Pete

i'd be getting either a tdo4 tdo5 or a t25 or t28. What type you get if your able then put a rebuild kit in. they are normally around $100 -$150 on ebay. Mine cost $135 to the door and was here in a week

i have a 1kz and upgraded the turbo to a td05h. it has a small 16g wheel in it. gives a really big power increase over the ct12b and little lag. If you are only wanting to run small boost though, I would be looking at a ct12b. They are a small turbo that is really well matched to the 3 liter engines. They are good for about 21psi if you did want to pump it up. If you are running 10 max they will be a great turbo. You don't want anything that is too slow to spool. Mine only really starts coming to life at 10psi.
