Leaking fuel pump

Post by wagonsnz »

Hi all, I have a 93 surf SSR-X, and have noticed recently I have a diesel leak coming from the fuel pump. Apparently this is a common problem, due to low-sulphur fuel or just seals wearing out, or both.
On start up it runs very rough and there is a constant drip coming from underneath, which stops once the engine has warmed up. I have read that you can change the two seals under the top plate of the pump without removing it from the car, but if it is one of the other seals, it is then a major job involving removing a lot of stuff to get it out completely for a refurb.
On closer inspection, mine seems to be leaking from the bottom side near to the block somewhere but very hard to get a decent look without pulling stuff off, which I am hesitant to do until I hopefully get a bit more info about this from the knowledgable folks on here.
I am happy to do jobs like this myself, and have done before, BUT if it involves taking a crapload of parts out then I am a bit more hesitant, especially involving timing etc. If this is actually a common problem, it would be interesting to know if anyone has had it, and/or any info/ideas on what to do? If I got someone to do it for me, any hints on who to go to? And is it going to cost a small fortune...? I am in Christchurch.

Apologies if this is covered on here somewhere already, I had a search and couldn't find anything.

Thanks in advance

If its not leaking from top seal or throttle shaft oring then the pump will need to come of and the seals done... Costs between 3-5 hundred for re-kit but can get costly if pump has other issues..... You have to remove the timing belt and pump pulley to remove pump... Not to much of a major if you can swing spanners and a good opportunity to replace a cam belt.... A diesel machanic would prob charge between 6 and 9 hundred just to remove pump and do cambelt and refit without repairing the pump... So can be expensive.. .. Hope it helps

If the top seals are gone then my opinion is to replace all the seals in the pump because if a couple have gone the rest won't be far behind.

If you can find the leak , clean it well & seal it with silicon as I have done , works fine .

Pretty dodgy idea, that sort of repair would not last long.

mds in kaiapoi is really good and reasonably priced, i took mine there.
i do agree, if it is leaking in one place get the pump rebuilt.
i did my top seal in place and 2 month later it started leaking from the bottom and i had to take it out anyway
