80 Series potential death-trap

Post by xj »

So twice now, once while giving it the right slipper heading up the passing lanes just out of Moerewa, and again in 5:00 traffic yesterday while again with the gas on, the accelerator has stuck on momentarily after taking my foot off the pedal, only for a couple of seconds, but enough to give me the shits.

Today I thought I best have a nosy to see if there was anything obvious. 30 seconds after opening the bonnet it became fairly evident what was going amiss.......

Simply bending the bottom up should have solved the issue, but it had the potential to be real farkn nasty.

Is this a regular problem, or is mine an isolated case?

Damn nasty .....but why did it bend??
Is where the cable is attached on left hand side too low & tending to bend the bottom of guide ...if its bent once it WILL bend again.

I'll help ya out XYZ,

I'll give not 1 but 2 Mince and cheese pies and a bottle of Fanta for it.

I agree with above in so much as that cable approach angle looks to low.
Ugly is a state of mind..... and the state of my truck!

tallsam66.... nah the cables seated right. I can only assume that when the new engine has been put in its been bent while off, and hasnt been picked up once its been bolted back on, or, judging by the scoring on the inside of the fitting below the cable, that its been well bent at some stage and not been fixed properly. I'll have another look at the cable angle tomorrow. I'll be keeping an eye on it for sure.

kok-hound..... itll have to be 2 x Oxford mince and cheese and an L&P. Apparently bits of Fanta can get stuck in your teeth, not keen.

I did indeed... on both counts... while the trusty Jeep just sits in the shed.

Might just sell them all and buy that LWB G-Wagon on TM

ha the sticking throttle cable is nothing

when you get a quite day pop the steering box off the chassis rails and inspect the chassis of cracks as they will start to crack behind the steering box from between the mounting bolts crush sleeves first then the cracks will slowly work there way out.
i had photos of the cracks in my chassis until Somebody (as in point a finger at me) decided that a supper flat phone will always work better if ya run it over with ya truck  thus no more pics :(

anyways its worth having a looksee especially if you are running bigger tyres on her

you could do that but you need to tow a fuel trailer behind it to get anywhere that was built by the guy from mercworks in tirau and i have heard him quote some disturbing fuel figures lol
my 4wd is not a truck

old mercedes never die but sometimes they do need some love

older cars are good, mercedes are better, older mercedes are the best

1) Been there checked that.... its all been reinforced/repaired by the previous owner.

2) 31s are the max, and thats whats on it at the moment. Ive still got the ZJ with 33s and the Landy/Bush truck with 35's. If I want other tyre sizes Ive got ready to go options.
Its also already got 2 x extra trans coolers plumbed in, a brand new radiator and a replacement/rebuilt engine and trans (100k old)
