80 series rev counter, hows it work

as per the title

I wish to know how the 80 series rev counter works, as in where it gets its pick up from

reason for asking is an ongoing issue I seem to have after driving in water

at queens birthday weekend I went into a sloppy wet hole at rallywoods and ever since when on the open road over 2000rpm it has this tendency to completely cut out

the dash diff lock lights light up and the alternator gauge flickers and the rev counter gauge flickers as well, tonight when it did it, I noticed the headlights also flick off for a second as well, so it seems it has complete electrical shutdown for a second

what this also means is that the cruiser loses all power, now this is where the reason for the rev counter question comes in, because once the brief electrical cutout happens and the cruiser loses power, it will not pick up and drive again until the rev counter drops to 2000rpm, then it drives again

its not the first time its happened and the last couple of times it happened it was after driving in watery mud holes

in the past its gone away after a few weeks driving, but this time it seems to be a little bit more persistent

so any explanations you guys have would be awesome thanks

Have you tried another engine computer? (maybe you could borrow one), there is a thread on here about the caps in the prado ones needing fixing, maybe its a similar issue?, as for the tacho my silver one doesn't like the cold (takes a min or 2 to warm up ... I blame the previous owner as it inherited a bit of landroverness) and the green one fuel guage didnt like the cold either. Would a bit of electrical contact cleaner over your loom plugs help?

Had a similar prob in the gf silvia. Been bugging the #### out of me for ages. It would lose power for short periods too. Had alt tested cleaned every connection I could find. Had engine running with bonnet up wriggled fuse box and car would shut down. Found problem, previous owner had changed the alternator fuse and lost the original bolt for fuse. Bolt was rusty and too long so wasn't making contact. Fuse spade was purple from arcing out. All fix now though.

Thats wat Caused a similar prob for me.

came to a complete stop on the motoway tonight in wonderful welly weather

got out to check all battery leads etc etc as there was no power to the truck, but they were fine

was about to contemplate crawling under the truck in the rain to look at starter and alternator when it got power back, so started her up and slowly drove home

gonna check all possible wiring tomorrow, but I got a sneaky suspicion that it could possibly be the computer with possibly issues stemming from when I drowned it 3 years ago

might have the odd comp lying around from the 80 that i wrecked .philly b pulled the comps out so he might know which ones i might have

If you can open it check for leaking capacitors.. they are round and of different values but can be repaired.. it'll look like they have brown goo or of the like on the pcb area below it.. just a thought..

headlights were the only thing still going when it shut down last night

everything else dead

will probably look at it next weekend now, as its outside in the most stunning Welly weather and it can wait till I can get it to work inside out of the crappy rain and wind

HAd a think about it and it could possibly water still in and around relays.. ie soked inside and once water gets in and cant get out , can play havoc.. did you run a dehumidifier in cab for a week or so? when ya drowned it..? could be earth side not working as well..could be battery terminals.. corrosion..? list goes on..

ok this is a long shot as I am not an 80 series owner.
Basically this all started after a dip in some mud / water.
Reading between the lines it didn't get into the passenger compartment.
So it can only effect those components on the outside / engine bay etc etc.
With this in mind I dialed up a 1990 80 series with diesel engine / manual box in Toyodiy.com and had a look in the relay chapter...(don't know the exact year and model bit of a guess)
There is a voltage relay located in the engine bay area...
This could be full of water / mud or its connectors....
As it controls voltage and you have multiple systems freaking out it could be a suspect?

Note it looks like it is tucked up under the left front guard or in that location.

if it is along that I have some of the 80 series main relays etc from stripping mine down.. still have quite a few so just hola..

water was over the bonnet of the 80 on a 3" suspension lift, was lapping just below the bottom of the steering wheel

the pic in my avatar is after it was pulled backwards out of the hole

have now been through the engine bay and checked every fuse, relay, connection

afterwards I drove home and it was still cutting out

today on the other hand, I pulled all relays, connections etc that were in the passengers and drivers footwell which as you can see from above pics were well and truly under water

they were clean of corrosion but some were just a teeny bit dirty from muddy water, so they have all be liberally sprayed with contact cleaner and all tightly pushed back together

have been driving round all afternoon at all speeds and loads and not once did it cut out or flicker

so fingers crossed I've fixed the issue for now
