LJ78 How to get into 4wd
Hi all,
This may sound stupid but how do I get my LJ78 into 4wd?
I've tried pushing the hub lock button then the H4 button, still spinning just the rears, Tried shifting into Low4, still no drive to the front.
Am I doing something wrong or is something fucked?
Cheers

Re: LJ78 How to get into 4wd
is it still running the factory electirc hubs? these can cause issues.
first turn on hubs then try turning front drive shaft by hand with truck in park. if does move then id say issues is hubs.

Re: LJ78 How to get into 4wd
Put it into Lo 4 and it should automatically engage the transfer case and front hubs if electric.
Then grovel underneath with one front wheel jacked in the air. Check whether the front driveshaft is free to rotate or not.
If it does rotate then the vacuum engagement for the transfer case is likely not working. Could be a wee hose off in engine bay. Up by drivers side firewall near rear bonnet seal. There are two hoses from memory. (on KZJ-71 anyway)
If driveshaft is locked then likely front hubs not engaged.
With the wheel in the air check whether the tyre is free to rotate when the driveshaft is locked. Then jack up and check the other hub as well.
Are the hubs still electric ones? Sometimes these give problems, however usually it is just the brushes that need cleaning. Strip and put back together carefully with a small piece of wire inserted through the hole to hold the brushes up.

When you push the Hub lock switch in, you should hear the motors makeing a small noise for approx 4 seconds.

Re: LJ78 How to get into 4wd
Evening all,
right so at work today I tried to turn the shaft by hand with hub lock button in, couldnt turn it, tried it with button out, still couldnt turn it, in park or neutral.
This weekend I'll jack each front wheel up, hit the lock button and see if I can turn the wheels.
When I push the button, there is no sound coming from the hubs at all. When in H4 or L4 there is no light up on the dash either, I understand that these trucks may not have a light or the light may be blown but I thought it to be a bit strange.
Hopefully this weekend I'll have more to report back to you guys, thanks heaps for all your advice, you're lifesavers
cheers,
Mike

Don't forget to have the engine running so the vacuum pump is running...Its what moves the actuator in the transfercase !...

Re: LJ78 How to get into 4wd
Tried it out again to no avail.
Went out into middle of nowhere, pulled onto the grass and it still wouldnt go in, I assume its the hubs but I dont know.
On a lighter note, the factory rear e-locker works a treat, and a roadside in the Ashburton district now has 200m of snaking wheel tracks haha.
once I get the 4wd sorted, and the starting issue, I'll be ordering new shocks and tires, hoping the 2 issues don't actually cost too much/anything...
Cheers guys, will let you know how I get on

Remove the hub end caps , with Key on, push H4, Little gears on the hub motors should turn for approx 4 seconds and reverse when H4 button is released.

Hi all,
Jacked her up this morning, neither of the fecken hubs are locking, is there a fuse somewhere for them or something? Also should there be a 4wd light come on when H4 and L4 are selected?
Cheers

dont piss about with them or you'll be posting one of these threads after every trip you take your truck out on, theres only 2 options are get an oldblue manual conversion or go down the manual hub swap route

Don't mean to sound thick buuuutttttt....
Whats the old blue thing you fellas are talking about?
Couldn't get either of the hubs to lock the other day.
On a bright note, the starter motor was F&^ked so now she starts first time everytime
