pajero suspension lift
Winding the torsions is the way to go for an easy 50mm lift.
Any other option is big bucks as you need an aftermarket cross member and other bits to drop the whole front drive system down.
Winding the torsions will not reduce your front suspension, as you are going to trim the lower bump stops (2 on each side, on the underneath op the top A-arm, make sure you trim all 4 the same amount, cutting them in half will gain an extra 40mm or so of droop) when you do this so as to regain your down travel.
Dont go over 50mm unless you want to start replacing your CV Boots regularly
Larger tyres will also give you an extra bit of "lift"

For 33's you probably need to be considering a body lift, otherwise in the twisty stuff the tyres may foul the bodywork.
You should get away with 32's without the lift.
Do some searching on the net for discussions on body lifts. on the pajero a 2 inch body lift is relatively straight forward.
The bump stops can be cut in half, the 20mm clearance that you can see at the moment equates to about 60mm or so at the wheels.
I would say yours has not been lifted yet as stock they seem to have about that 20mm gap.
If the torsion adjusters have already been wound in all the way (your truck is 21 years old, so they would have been wound up to compensate for the natural sag in the torsions).
If this is the case you need to "re-index" the torsion bars, once again do a search on google, keywords like "torsion index pajero OR montero"
a couple of sites worth looking over are http://www.4x4wire.com , they have a section for the mighty pajero (called Montero over there as Pajero is very close to spanish for "wanker") and also http://www.outerlimits.com, do a search in the mitzy section.

Do a search on http://www.outerlimits4x4.com ive seen a few pics of pajeros on there the same model as yours up on 33's and 35's. Theres heaps of helpful tech on there.
Dont give up on the old gen 1 paj, good vehicle. I had one untill I upgraded 3 months ago.
As far as the larger tyres, you need to mount them on Nissan patrol rims or similar as they have the correct offset
http://www.4x4wire.com/mitsubishi/tech/wheel_faq/
The above page has the correct wheel offset to fit 33 by 12.5's to a gen 1 paj like yours.
For the body lift, read the articles on the net, you can get the spacers made up for $40 to $120 bucks depending on where you shop. Any decent engineering supply place can chop up some 2 inch spacers out of aluminium or urethane round bar, and the bolts need to be 2 inches longer that what you already have, grade 8.8

PR wrote:you will have no show getting anything bigger then 31x10.5 on an 85 pajero with out a 2in suspension lift, then you can go to 33x10.5 but not 33x12.5 as you will keep hitting the inside of the tyre unless you get your rims off centred. I belive you should just get a hilux or a swb pajero 1992 or older much eaiser then the older square box models.![]()

PR - Have you owned a gen 1 paj ? maybe an introduction from yourself, what you drive, have driven, and as to why the "older square box" model is a worse option than a hilux ?
Otago - the LWB is fine for offroading, and can handle a bit more suspension lift than the short wheel base models due to the longer rear drive shaft. My best advice is decide on what you want to spend and go from there, go for the suspension lift regardless of what size tyres you plan to run. If you have problems fouling your bodywork, and have hacked off all that you can, then look at the body lift.
For a bit more articuulation at the front, remove the front sway bar. if you dont like the handling put it back on. with it removed you will alow the full range of travel that you now have thanks to your suspension lift and trimmed bump stops. with the sway bar in place you lose some of the articulation.

i also have a old box pajero, full of rust, smokes like a train, but is heaps of fun,
the best part is you can buy them for the price of one new simex tyre.
ive used my 83 swb 2litre petrol turbo in 2 rallies now and she still goes well.
i wacked off the sway bar , wacked off the exhaust, wacked off the bump
stops and give it death, lack of suspension travel is an issue though, may be an lsd may help.
if looking for tyres to fit it i have 750x16 sat firestones xply on 16x 6 hilux rims . no rubbing at all they are about the same height as 32"
go the wanker.
