vehicle speed sensor ideas 3rz into yn60 surf

Post by bigstu »

Hi Im putting in a 3rz into my 85 surf, It needs a vss for fuel economy/normal function, the u.s guys off marlin etc all seem to swap the whole dash, loom, etc into there trucks or just a late model vss in place of speedo output to cover the engine and dont worry bout the speedo as they are trailer queens. With mine being road legal and needing a speedo does anyone know of any options for the vss and cable setup to run? I could just buy a marks adapter commodore vss kit but at $500aus im not to keen.
Aparently it needs to be a four pulse type, Reading up some of the u.s sites there where a few late 90's tacoma/hiluxs that had a cable speedo output with a vss on the side of it which would be ideal, has anybody seen one of these over here?
Anyone whos a electronics wizz who could make something that would work or just any help/ideas would be great.

Thanks Stu

you can get a adapter that screws onto gear box then speeedo cable screws ito that. we have used them at work when fitting terratrips into hiluxs for road surveying type work.. not sure what they are worth or how many pulses per revoultion. similar to this http://www.google.co.nz/imgres?start=24 ... :200,i:133
Edit.. tdo6 or tdo7 is a beter image
http://www.terratrip.com/probes.htm
we used to get them from the speedo shop which is part of auto trail in hamilton.

or another option would be to mount a proximity switch on gear box to pick up on 4 driveshaft bolts to get your four pulses per rev.. this option can be finiky to set up,but we use one on bosses wrx to drive his terrartrip rally computer
modified surf, hardly drive it seem to keep modifying it....

Hi Stu,
Was just talking to my brother, he says we didn't use the speed sensor at all, it was only a 3 or 4 wire hook up, no vss, I have no speedo at all, but if you are using the 85 gearbox and dash, its cable operated, but you probably know this already lol

Im not going to use the VSS input on mine either, but thats only a 4YE so a little older tech than a 3RZ.
From what I can make out, the sensor is just a magnet switch on the side of the speedo cable behind the instruments, so you could probaby pinch one off the cluster from a lot of early-mid 90s-ish toyotas and make it work. (This is from reading the toyota efi manuals). It will literally be a small wheel with 4 magnets on it, and a reed switch in a fixed posistion. Likely all enclosed inside the cluster housing tho.
As far as I am aware, it should run fine without it if your using a manual box, of course prehaps not 100% as accurately as it would've from the factory in the original vehicle. Of course the engine check light will stay on if you use one tho.
I think Im the same as Jafa, 4 or so wires and done (aside from the chopped loom i've had to repair). Hopefully get it wired n running over the next couple of days so we will see

Awesome I wont worrie about it then, just thought it might help with fuel economy which is rather important as I travel 80ish ks return daily. if I stumble upon something down the track that'l work or it becomes a problem then ill sort it. What have you guys done in the way of fuses and relays? as the most techical thing on this truck seems to be the auto choke, I want the wiring to replicate close to what mr toyota intended without going to the extent of tracking down a 3ye surf or 2.7 hilux's body loom and splicing that into the mix as well.

Engine still sitting at tintins in putaruru  Im getting it freighted by a company that work uses quite abit for cheap only down side is Its taking a while to get the right truck with the right load in the right place at the right time to pick it up :( thought it was all go for a bit yesterday till I found out it was a puplic holiday up there the place we were hoping to load it was shut, starting to think it doesn't want to come south
From what I understand it bolts staight into the engine bay you want to get hold of a manual engine with bellhousing and clutch etc,
Im going to get a efi yn61 surf fuel tank with the in tank pump some ln61 diesel lines that should cover the fuel side then just need ln61 clutch lines to get clutch accross to the passenger side then on top of the usual starter motor, temp, oil pressure wires there should be just a few earths and 3-4 wires that some will need relays some direct batt power hopefully easy as 8)
Will prob get into the whole build thread thing once things start arriving
Thanks Stu

What part southland do you live and work? never seen your surf getting round before see a couple of ruff as ones tho, if you ever see a standard as gold solid axle surf wave out its probably me or the wife she takes it to work now she hates it and has nick named it the gold brick,

Im not sure if this will be the same for your trans but the surfs had a VSS between the auto and transfer case, depending on the vehicle it can be 2, 4 or about 30 pulse. Its completely seperate to the speedo drive. Could this be what your after?

you guys seen these it doesn't matter what combination of tyres or diff ratio you are running and if you change things down the track it will still be accurate

Manuals dont have anything like that, but if I do end up needing to sort one perhaps a hole through into the transfer coupling with some kinda diy speed sensor setup on it maybe? thought about something off the driveshaft bolts but the first muddy hole it went near would kill that idea.

vss and cable speedo, sounds like a g16 vit into a 413/ sammy deal.. somethin to do with a signal pulse not 100% on it myself but sounds relevant, need to find out the finer points
