A friend of ours has had what sounds like a big problem with there 90's auto crusier, this is copied from his post on another forum...
well its happened!!! doing a hard turn on slippery grass from standing start in the cruiser and a loudish bang ,then all sorts of horrible grinding noises and no foward motion . leads me to believe that i have broken something expencive in the tranni. can still drive it, but only with the center diff locked. anyone got any ideas on what is wrong, who to go see or does anyone know anyone with a spare laying around that is for sale?
I said it sounds like a blown CV but Im not a mechanic so it was a stab in the dark.
Any ideas
Cheers
Daz.
A little help/Advice

if it does not drive in two wheel drive but can drive it with centre diff lock in sounds like he has broke a rear axle shaft or something in diff but from your post the way it says think you will find it is at the rear gearbox and transfer are ok as it will drive in four wheel drive so the front is ok as well
hope this helps

;-p
better put a reason behind my statement i guess......
the full time 4wd cruisers have the slippy centre diff so that means that if one wheel looses drive she goes no where, lock the centre diff and your away. ok so that rules out trand/transfer case as it still drives.
doing a hard turn points at CV.
loudish bang ,then all sorts of horrible grinding noises and no foward motion again points at CV.
jack the front off the ground and try to turn each front wheel one at a time, this will tell you which one has gone(probably the right side),rock the wheel backwards and forwards as it may bind up on the broken cage and balls inside, listen for crunching and rubbibg noises from within...
get a second hand CV not a cheap after market one, they ARE CRAP ! get a genuine cruiser CV second hand, will last much longer
thats just my guess tho

If you already know everything, DON'T ask bloody questions!!

Will he need to lock his centre diff to check it as well???
nah, with the full time 4x4 you will be able to hear which cv has gone just by turning the wheel as the drive is there all the time, check the right side first
