cheap winches
who's got one of these chinese winches you see on t/me, the ones that look like a t/max & 10000 pound , nonbranded, are they worth a punt, for someone who may only use it 3 or 4 times a year
. everything seems to come out of china now

My two cents worth. (from experience)
If you only need it now and again and not too seriously stuck then Chinese lookalikes are ok. (Quote "OK")
If your serious about 4x4 and need it almost every time you go out. Pay the extra and get a better winch or get your mate with the better winch to winch you out...

I have a generic brand winch for the front of the rover . Would only be used to pill me out of a mild stuck once in a blue moon . So was happy with that ( have not mounted or used it yet , not been out enough in the rover
)
I have also got a turfor style winch I keep in the back of the zuk , good to know its there but have not used it on a zuk yet . Used the cable to pull/chop a tree out of the way and winch to whales ( nissans to non zukkers ) together to free a pto .
Cheers
Chris

I put a Chinese 8500lb winch on the front of my old '95 Surf and I used that a fair bit. Worked great and reliable. I wouldn't recommend one for Winch challenges but for the odd emergency they are great value. I have found Kent Distributors in Chch to be helpful with parts.

You pretty much get what you pay for.
I,ve seen the chinese winches in action in the Waikato mud and I damm sure know what I would want on the front of my truck up Thompsons at 10:00 at night in the pissing down rain(It always rains in the Waikato- even at night!).
But seriously though they are probally ok for light self recovery but for serious club trips into real mud your better off spending more on a better brand.
Cheers
