Installing 60 Series power steer into FJ40

Hi All,

I`ve read the online article on the Ihatemud website but would apreciate your comments.

I`m wanting to get power steering into my 40. Have a 60 series power steer box and pump.

The box will have to mount to the outside of the chassie but where can i get the shaft that goes from the existing steering shaft to the box? Looks like I`m going to have to mod the shock tower too as this shaft will run along the top of the chassie rail

Any of you guys been through this? Got any good photos for me? (one below)

prune the back of your tower out to make room for the shaft which you will have to make/mix and match, as well as cutting a hole in the battery box stand thingy , not really that much work, just lots of nutting out and planning ... you can dooo eeeet !

ps: im gonna be putting a 60 series box into mine when i find one at the right price

i happen to be going through the same thing myself mnc..

putting 60's gear onto the 40..

have removed the 40's shock towers and am gettin some towers like these..


that'll eliminate the 'shaft along the chassis rail' problem..

as for the rest of the shafts, i'm doin a mix-n-match to marry it all up.. gotta mount the box on the rail so crush tube and drillin plus placement of the box is important.. not to mention the bit of 5mm plate on the inside of rail too..

hopefully get it done soon..

Those are some big Shock towers Nib - Are they the ford towers mentioned on the Getrude truck build forum (IH8mud)?

I`ve found a shaft (hope will be right length). Do you need to cut the existing steering shaft? and if so how do you get the little splines onto the cut shaft where it mounts?

Dont answer if you dont want to I haven`t had a good look at my truck yet so will see what i can do.

its all good fella... good to 'air it' and sort..

-yes they are the ford shock tower types mentioned..

-i need to cut the existing shaft (from a 60 to use the uni's) and lengthen.. this'll save the need for puttin spline onto the end...

well, thats the story at the moment.. we'll see when the time comes..

When you mount the new shock towers and when you mount a power steering box - is it just a drill though the chassie and big bolts plus washers job? or are you supposed to weld something in to hold some bushes or whatever???

ya drill through chassis and weld a bit of 5mm plate on the inside of chassis rail for added strength too.. then ya have a bit of pipe to go through chassis rail to plate so when bolts done tightly, it doesnt crush the chassis rail, hence the name 'crush tube'.. required for a cert and piece of mind..
