70 series factory diff locks

After having my left cv and axle replaced - I no longer have working front diff lock

Anyone got a few hints on what I should look for as there is nothing in the manual :?:

What year 70s, If it has or had electric hubs, make sure the hub button is in.
If its not in then you can't get 4WD on Diff Lock. also you need the rear locker in,as well. Front won't engauge with out the rear locker in gear.

Did the new replacement axle have the extra long spline into the diff head ? the long spline is for the locker to slide on to engage and disengage

Just double checked,,It is the left axel that needs the long spline,,can get one from Aust through NZ Bus & truck spares ,, They where $450..

1988 - cable diff locks - - i will put on the stands again when changing back to the Simex's and re-check that I am not dreaming.

hmmmmmm - axle - I will check with the guy who fixed it - the axle was a stronger version that came from Australia - it had to be changed here because they left off a circlip ring gap

Thats a good question.

Did you have the diff lock engaged when you removed the front axle. Sometime the dog clutch can be knocked free of the fork if the axle is removed.

Is it a coil 70 or a leaf sprung.

Also is the axle you pulled out the long spline axle or the short pline. If you replaced long spline with a short spline you will have issues.

probably did have it engaged - bloody Rotorua Safari :wink:

Leaf spring and the axle should have been the same - will check.

If the axle is the same - then remove diff head :?:

I would take the front diff out and see if the dog clutch is ok.

What I meant to say before was the I always lock the diff heads up when removing the axle. that way the dog clutch is locked together and makes inserting the axle back in easier. Plus you need the diff lock engaged when removing the diff head so you can get the diff head out.

You'll see why when you have it on the floor.

Finally have had the diff head popped - the previous dip stick mechanic put in an axle short on splins

Anyone got a suitable axle for factory diff locks in a 70 series cruiser

or can recommend where to get one :?:

Try Pradoman on here, he works for Just Cruisers in Rangiora I think.

if you cant find one brian howat at howat engineering could make one for you ,only problem is that hes pretty busy and not sure how soon he could do one .i think he charges under $200 bucks for an axel out of 4340

does he do 80 series for that price sig :wink:

dont see why not ,only difference is cv spline count,but check with him first.

Thanks - I have another one coming from Australia - which will mean I will have a one that have burred splines, one where the splines aren't long enough to engage the diff locks and hopefully a correct good one :shock:

hey man i know your pain!!

i went on the auckland members trip started of by blowing left cv mudlva had a spare so being the top guy he is helped me pop it in. then oh no theres a funy sound in the front end. so called it a day and drove it to a good mate of mine. he's a mechanic :wink:

so long story short i'm now lookn for left axle both cvs ring and pinion and pinion bearings :evil:

yay for lockers and the inexperienced driver !!! haha turned into and expensive day
