Undoing rusted bolts?

Post by rowinz »

Anyone know a secret squirrel way to undo rear towbar bolts that have rusted in (to captive nuts)? Aside from dousing with CRC, undo a bit, CRC, do up, undo a bit more....takes a while with 12 bolts. Anything better for it than CRC?

From what I can tell the bolts themselves are fine, its just probably some rust on the threads...

i have found that a product called breakaway made by cyclo works way better than crc but they all will work eventually, if you dont have to use the captive nuts again you can be rougher and use a bigger bar   biggest problem is if the nuts turn you are screwed and will have to cut them anyway, good luck,

Heat or smack the top of the bolt with a big hammer to shock and break the rust bond.
Whilst the post above says not to much heat, if you don't want to reuse the bolts I have always found that no rusted bolt is a match when it starts glowing orange. Then it will always undo.

You wouldn't want to light a smoke when using that brew :D
By the sounds of it this would also make an awesome:
-engine degreaser
-gasket stripper
-paint stripper
-sustitute for "P"
-nasal decongestant
-laxative
That is some that spring to mind quickly, I am sure other people could think of a few more uses. :D
