front hubs (broken?

Post by ScottishLuke »

Hi there, just a bit of a question relating to front locking hubs on my safari. It goes into 4wd alright but when you put it in 2wd on the open road you can hear the gears inside the hubs trying to disengage (or engage?) until it gives a good bang and comes right. I took the hubs off for a look and the drivers one isn't flash so I assume its had it. I guess what I'm asking is do they tend to chew out the hubs or could it be that I've put them back on incorrectly at some point? Also, who knows where the best place to get replacements is?

Sorry its all a bit long winded, thanks

I have the same problem since the mechanic did my wheel bearings.
Worked fine until then, so with mine, I put it down to being reinstalled incorrectly.
I took them off yesterday, but am unsure exactly how they can be put together wrong, and the problem is the same, in fact they will click when in 4wd.

If you reverse a couple of meters after diengaging 4wd does this help? Mine don't try to engage if I do this, although it's annoying as I never had to do it before.

I always do reverse after I've been in 4wd but it doesn't seem to make any difference now. It all sounds sweet until you get up over about 50 k/h then it just starts grinding till it gives a bang like it's coming out of 4wd.

I didn't think you could install them wrong but I get the feeling that I might have.

The drivers side one was actually broken inside too. The outer (larger) ring gear has broken off its locking tabs and it all just springs apart when you take hub off. There was some filings inside as well which isn't very good.
