Transfer case gears

Post by mudmike »

Hi all, I'm finding the 33" a bit much for the gearing on the kzj78,
I see from forum some have done new diff heads,
My question is has anyone done transfer case gears?
Marks adapters do some, not sure on cost. would like to have better low but leave high alone as run standard tyres day to day to save the muddys for play. Are there gears from another transfer case that fits to lower gearing?
Any help would be great :D

I went from 33" to 35" and my gearing's shit :? . I think the marks gears are around $2k so its not a cheap option and I remember seeing some US forums wingeing about them being a lot noiser that the OEM gears.

might be better off playing around with diff ratios if you've got the smaller 8" diffs?

Have a talk to Nigel at Just Cruisers in Rangiora he's not long put a set in his Prado and he's running 35s he went for the set with the 8% underdrive in high ratiohe'll tell you what you need to know.

The 35's sure suck the power alright. Try turning them with a standard 3B diesel  . Have been looking at these gear sets for while and am pretty sure thats the way i'll go. 4WD Upgrades are the NZ distributor and quoted about $2250. Thats just for the gears, you still need to have them fitted  I spoke to Nigel a while back about these gears, he said they are cut differently and so are a bit noisier. But i doubt they'd be noisier than my motor anyway. Diff gears are another option, probably about half the price by the time they are installed. But the lower you go in the gears you reduce the number of gears that mesh. A 4.1 ratio diff has almost 3 teeth in contact whereas a 5.29 is probably closer to 1.5 teeth so potentially weaker.

I'd hate to think what it did to your 3B coz it definately took a piece out of my chev :? :!:

the cruiser 8 7/8" diffs only go down to 4.11:1 ratio which is what most cruisers run anyway so it really only leaves the transfer gear sets to bring the gearing back down unless you go to the smaller 8" diffs :?

very rare, but I think you can get 4.3s for cruiser. Sig has been looking for some for a number of years now.

I doubt if 4.3 would make enough of a difference.

yep, thats probably true. I run 33s on my BJ74, and I find that it labours too much in 4th at 50kph, so I have to run around town in 3rd gear all the time. 4.3s would make that better but probably still not good enough.

you need some flash engineer bloke with a calculator and lots of time to tell you what ratios are best. Or find an even flasher engineer bloke that can do it in his head.

yeah, we'd all look stupid if we went back to the 215R 15s that the factory decided were the best tyre for the cruiser.

You can get factory Toyota 8 7/8" 5.29 gears
Mudzilla ran them in his old BJ73 with a healthy 13bt (heaps of boost, intercooled, propane) It could spin 36" centipedes on the road and never had a problem with the diffs being weak.

Have been looking at gear costs, the marks adapters gear sets are bit to much at this stage, but have been told about u.s. made gears 21 and 23 spline for $395 U.S. , which is much better, now have to do some research to see if they will go in my case, can get standard or 4.1:1,
4.7:1 or 5.1:1. and at that price and the exchange rate is the cheepest option I've seen. Oh they are trail tamer gears from advanced adapters.

I think what Bill is saying is that you can get aftermarket R & P sets for cruisers that will gear them at almost any toyota ratio you want down to at least 5.29. With the dollar where it is at the moment, it is the perfect time to bring some gear in from the states.

kaney on here had to get a new transfer case on his prado (2lt-2 auto) and replaced it with one from another 70 series i think (im sure he can tell you) and it offset the gearing difference from his 33 and the standard 29s. about the same as in my truck going from 4.3 to 4.8 diffs. so they do come in different ratios factory maby try fining out if you can find a 2nd hand transfer case with the right ratios, might be the worth a look. his changed in low and hi range tho...
