Auto help please??
well i went out to the ashley today (even managed with one arm) with a mate who has a double cab hilux with a 3.8 commy engine and auto box(from the holden) anyway he got stuck and when trying to get out he had no drive in reverse, pulled him out and turned him around etc and decided best to head home, he pulled out up the hill and he pulled over, he had lost almost all drive in drive as well sort of like it was slipping, i towed him all the way home took the ropes off at his place etc and then he tried again and it was normal (worked fine in reverse and in drive)
any suggestions would be great thanks,

Never argue with an idiot, they drag you down to their level then beat you with experiance!
just a guess but it may have overheated, check the lines going from the trans to the radiator aren't kinked or crushed
or it may have shit in the auto trans sump when stirred up blocked the pickup filter
or it might be farked

The auto may be fine ...
My '91 Surf does this when I get it wet
Turns out there is an electrical connection to the Auto trans and when I go through deep water it gets water in it and confuses the computer, and it stops the engine reving above 1500 rpm and acts like a slipping clutch (though it does not have one).
When it dries out every thing returns to normal.
Though yours has had a transplant, I would be checking any electrical connections to the transmission.

There is no mechanical problem so difficult that it cannot be solved by brute strength and ignorance.

well a bit more info, it seems the conversion he has is from a vr commy which just so happen to have an electric auto tranny, it also seems that going anywhere near water with them stuffs them
, now its fixable for 700 ish but will probably happen again, so the plan is to bolt on the mechanical auto tranny from a vn which will bolt up sweet, but to do this he will have to run the vn ecu, does anyone no if they are compatabile eg have same plugs so he could just swap ecu's over without having to change the loom

Now thats interesting ...
How does that work ??
Does it have a bunch of solenoids doing the work ??
$700 is a lot of dollars ... what are they replacing ?? or is it the time taken to get to the bits that need replacing ??
