Black Smoke

Post by lanky »

Hi Guys

The 2L-T in my surf is starting to smoke more than it did a month ago. It used to blow a bit of black smoke on heavy loads or straining, now its
under medium loads as well. Its also blowing out alot more smoke than befor. Any help would be much appreciated!

have been told that black smoke means its running too rich and white is too lean, and that doing the timing should fix it, does this sound right?

Hmmmmm. Oil and filters would have been my first guess, but maby not. Timing could be something to look at for sure

Bit of a bugger when this happens, Looking at smoke pouring out of your baby aint cool.

I herd from a fella I know that white / blue smoke means the turbo could be on the way out and leaking, however im not too sure about running to lean or rich etc... Will try and find out more info.

If you have been doing alot of around town running maby take her for a good blowout on the open road??

How much black smoke? Really Bad all of a sudden, or Gradually? You could have gotten grit or something in your injectors? Or Fuel pump could be packing a sad? If its alot of smoke all of a sudden (im talking alot of somke) than you could of (hate to say it) blown a piston ring a while back and its worn a hole in the side of the piston, now letting oil through. Easiest way to check this is to do a compression test..

i wouldn't say alot of smoke, but its worse than it was when i bought it a month ago, injector pump was recond 10,000ks ago, will check timing and failing that get a compression test done.

i would of thought that if it was burning oil i would have blue smoke not black, and it hasn't used any oil between the 2 oil changes ive done

Does it use much oil? You could try one of those injector cleaner / stop smoke mixes that go into the fuel tank.

Well here is a list of things that causes black smoke:

1 Injector pump timing retarded - Smokes under load at high speed 2 Injector pump timing advanced - Smokes under load ot low speed
3 Weak cylinder compression - Smokes under load at all speeds, enginemay be hard to start
4 Restricted Air cleener - Smokes Under load at high speed
5 Turbocharger malfunction - Smokes under load and noticeable loss of power
6 Dirty injector nozzle(s) - Smokes undler load, especially at low and medium speeds, power may be down
7 Clogged/ Restricted fuel lines- smokes under load at low and medium speeds, power may be down
8 Sticking injectors- puffs of black smoke, sometimes with blue or white component. Engine may knock

Yea it would burn blue if it was your ring collapsed and it was buring oil. So its probably a fuel or air problem? If your air filter is cleen and your pump timing it right than its a high chance its a fuel problem. Injectors or fuel lines? Clogged fuel filter?

how did you go with the smoke? find out the possible problem?

I took my 2-lt surf out on the oldman range track yesterday and noticed that it was blowing a little bit more than before - under acceleration and especially if you put your foot down in 3rd or 4th and its labouring a little

Check your boost levels.
Not enough boost means lots of smoke and a loss of power.

But more of a concern, if it's running rich enough to blow black smoke then your exhaust temps are getting high enough to cause damage.
