any ideas on what it could be, hopefully its easy and cheap to fix but some how i doubt it, nothing seems to be.

high works well, no worries there, just in low, pops out all the time, bit of a worry when on steep hills

Sounds like a worn out transfercase, just hold the lever in low when your going down scary stuff and it'll probably keep going for another 20 years

mine does it to bungy cord is all you need

transfercase was only done not to long ago
oh well. might just have to get use to it then

Do you have a body lift? Sometimes that means the lever doesn't go in right as hard as is ideal and could tend to knock out

is it vacuum operated? check the 2 solenoids are working and there are no leaks in the pipe?, they should be under the dash next to the brake booster

H4 is vacuum opperated and L4 is mechanically operated with the lever the same as your cruiser

that maybe the reason, although its only not long ago started doing it, where as ive had the lift for ages

Just pop the rubber boot off the lever and have a look at whats happening to the lever when you engague and disengague L4.

When I lifted mine the lever was hitting the floor and I did a wee bend of the lever with a FBH and took up the remaining with the adjuster to clear the floor properly.

Its pretty common for transfer boxes to pop out when they get old and worn, you usualy just put up with it and know when to hold the lever in when your going down steep stuff under load

its easiest to see if you take the cover off around both sticks.
but is reachable from underneath.

the transfer lever piviots on the side of the case and from half way down that there is a linkage that goes to the actual selector on the box.

just behind the where the link joins the stick there is a lock nut that needs winding off (14mm)
take out the spilt pin and main pin that connects the lever to the linkage
now just wind the end of the linkage one way or the other depending on which way it needs to go. i did about three turns longer but that may be too much as now there is a little presssure on the stick at the front.
reconnect, pin and split pin then check, if ok tighten locknut.

hope you can follow that its a little tricky from underneath but entirely possible,

i also pulled the inner rubber boot down so it is completely insideout
i figure that it will not push as much down lower.
