First test today of new tow vehicle, bringing LJ80 home.... It sat below half from pirongia too Bombay hills, gave it a shoe full to keep the 90 kmh speed up, temp guage shot too 3/4 very quick, backed off as we crested the hill then back too below half way. Should I be concerned or is this toyota's way of making me panic. I know these engines are brilliant but also good at cracking heads. Testing again on friday to bring new toy home from Ohakune - a few big hills too climb

Re: 1KZ-TE temp guage - SSR Hilux auto
toyota guages are know to be fairly crude. any over heating i would look into.
i do not know with the hilux but surf with same motor and auto are very well know for overheating problems. a lot of the time the guage will not read hot.
do the usually things first, block EGR and disable butterfly, check raditor, check if transnision cooler is one that restrics flow to the radiator, check fan clutch and thermostat.

Re: 1KZ-TE temp guage - SSR Hilux auto
just had a FULL check over by bro in law's workshop - very thorough, installed extra trans cooler as it will be towing zuk all over nth island. Next on the list is exhaust, knew about history of these engines just thought if it was something sinister it would of shown it before and after a quick "forced" hillclimb, rather than only on 2 mins at full boost....
Re: 1KZ-TE temp guage - SSR Hilux auto
Have a read of this - it is quite interesting I thought and wonder how many other vehicles it applies to such as my own which never moves at all....

Re: 1KZ-TE temp guage - SSR Hilux auto
I read the first post, I will read them all now, but installed a mechanical guage in my old zuk - gti engine, radiator in the rear so put the probe in the line heading too the radiator. What the guage read compared too what the factory guage read was way different....
Will carry on reading....
Will carry on reading....
Re: 1KZ-TE temp guage - SSR Hilux auto
Alex is 16 years old but I have actually got 4 daughters. I have nearly persuaded the 10 year old that changing the oils and filters is a lot of fun and if she is very good girl I just might let her do it on a regular basis as a special treat
I got rid of the missus as she would not implement a major fuel economy mod I have in mind. I have now assigned this to the 14 year old daughter.

Re: 1KZ-TE temp guage - SSR Hilux auto
Fit a secondary aftermarket guage, that way you will know what the real temp showing is
70 series prado (KZJ78) and 90 Series Prado (KZJ95)
Re: 1KZ-TE temp guage - SSR Hilux auto

Definitally, or try the fix showen on that site provided. The factory temp guages dont give a accurate reading at all of what is happening
