Green Cruiser HELPPPP!! no 4x4..regards diff and t/case fj40

Ok so some of you know we got the green cruiser off Trademe,
flew up to pick it up , drove it down from auckland .. ran good at one stage got a bit of crap suked up from the tank making it stall but was running again soon after..
Nearly home we wanted to text the 4x4 see that it all works as should.
bypassed Aotea block plan was Drive up a hill and then leave..
got to some banks went to drive up one.... hardly got anywhere..
reversd back down gave it another go with a bit more revs.. *** BANG *** wat was that.. rolled back a bit and got out..
Driveshaft (rear) lying on the ground hahaha.. ok so its snapped from the diff exposing the bearing ect at the end of the diff, i dont know the words ..
ok so thought about what to do.. and wanted to move it in Front wheel drive but it had nothing.
got towed to the road with a friend and then on a tow truck back home.
so Hubs are in .. transfer case in 4x4 and No fronts moving..

conclusion No 4x4 and broken rear diff.
we cant Jack it up where its parked at the mo without puting it in 4x4 as its on a sloap..
the rear diff is also jammed at the moment so it cant be moved..

anyone around that can help..just with advise atleast Based in Lower Hutt
and Help or someone that could have a quick look for us be great..

also it has a toyota 5 speed box, 350 chev and i believe transfer box and gearbox is out of 60/70 series

lock the hubs on both front hubs (the twisty thing in the middle of the wheel) rock the car back and forward to have them engage and then get under it and try turn the driveshaft (both wheels on the ground) if you can turn it it is diff, if you cant then engage 4wd at the transfer case (when the rear diff is fixed) front wheels off the ground and handbrake on try to turn the driveshaft (should not turn because the rear diff is in the ground & handbrake on) have a look at the xfer case.

Also lockers to test put it in 4wd and engage lockers put handbrake on and lift a tyre try spin lifted tyre, disengage locker and it should spin do the same for the back but without handbrake

Replacing the pinion in the rear diff is fairly straight forward. Drive shaft off, diff head out / remove spider gears and replace broken pinion repeat in reverse (replacing oil and gaskets, nuts etc).

Have smashed one in mine and its a pretty common problem that some fix with a torsion bar from the chassis to the top of the diff.

Get a spare parts truck and a workshop manual off trademe. Then all you really need is a socket set and some gasket goo

The Cruiser Now is at My Bosses place Near Melling Lower Hutt, Im not sure if diff is damaged further as its jammed at the mo, Rears are locked and wont turn, But i guess when its out it can all be seen.
we were going to pull the diff out tonight But As we cant get 4x4 engaged for some braking in gear on the front decided its too dangerous as its on a slope.

ok so if we work out Transfer case we can work on rear diff.
The front driveshaft doesnt turn when hubs are in so It has to be from transfer box.
also we only have an option to select low 4x4 but i know with that Transfer case on 60/70 series ya push a button to engage high 4x4 I had a hunt and cant find any button ect thats been fitted.
so im assuming its been setup to only run low4 .

transfer case has to come out do you think?

if the raer drivesahft was lying on tyhe ground then vit sounds like its shit the pinion

If its a 5 speed gearbox it should have a vacueme activated front input shaft to engague 4wd. The 2 solanoids that switch the vacueme on and off are known to fail and also the diaphram on the transferbox can fail

You want to check those are working before you pull the transfercase out

The rear wheels lock up as the teeth on the other end of the broken pinion fall back into the spider gears in the diff - means nothing can turn properly. You'll see what I mean when you open it up.

If you undo the axels form each of the rear hubs and pull them out say 50mm you should be able to roll it round on flat ground again.

We got it sorted this morning. Front wheel drive is now all go. I drained the rear diff (nice metalic paste ) pulled the axles (god bless the full floater ) and whipped out the diff head diff head had self destructed so hes off to get a new one then we can slap it back together and hes away and hopefully laughing

Was it driven from Auck in 4wd and the lockers engaged?
