electrical fault on surf...

Post by SmurfN »

so i took my 85 surf through some water on the weekend and she got a bit wet under the hood. now the electric back window won't go up and the charge light stays on...

i have been told the alternator could have some water in it and causing electrical problems...??? the volts on the battery is about 16 or so... the gauge on the dash has a half way and 18 at the top and its just over half which i assume would be what it is meant to be at... 13 or 14...

any ideas/remedies/solution/suggestions?

thanks peeps :D

How much does the needle go down when you try the back window? If it's not charging i've found it goes down heaps. But when charging doesn't go down that far. My guage sits just below the second line under the 18v line. Just over half is no good.

the needle doesn't move at all when i try the back window. so yours sits towards the top and everything works? there is a line just under 18v so should it be there? mine was up there before i went through the water and got stuck and drowned a tad  now charge light on etc

Mine sits just below that line. Sounds like your back window relay isn't working if the line's not moving at all, you should hear a click as well. The relay is just behind the back seats on the passenger side and get's it's earth from one of the roof bolts. Check that as well.

Also does your altenator have a separate plug on it?? i've got a commodore motor so don't know too much about the 3y. On mine one pin off the plug goes straight to the battery and one goes to the charge light. And my altenator wont charge if one of these wires is broken. hope that makes sense :P :P

yeah makes sense... it has a pin coming out the back and splits off into two... one going across into the left front guard and the other somewhere else... couldn't track it but i would say to the battery. i am not too worried if the charge light on as everything seems to be working ok at the moment... unless it could cause problems?

i just bought a 85 with the 3y has new alternator and regulator and after driving it up from Christcurch and going through a real nasty rain thunder/lightning storm in taupo my charge light stays on as well. voltage is all good doesnt seem anything is wrong. but have been messing with stereo latly and checking voltage with volt meter and at the cigeret plug and quite a few other places i get reversed polarity???? its real wierd. everything work fin tho.

any ideas? does this have to do with the charge light?
cheers

Sounds like you may have a bad earth somewhere and getting some back feed, check the battery earth and if you have done a body lift get a new earth to the body from the chassis.
