hilux starter motor

Post by SmurfN »

so i have problems with the alternator on my 85 lux and now the starter motor i think. i got a new battery yesterday and it started sweet. now when i turn the key it doesn't turn over, it just clicks. managed to crash start it but nothing when turning the key from a stand start. would this be the starter motor?

i don't know much about them and would appreciate any help

ta :D

it sounds like the batterys gone flat if the starter solinoild's just clicking, if you've hooked the alt up incorrectly it may be discharging the battery (I did that once  )

Try turning the lights on to see if the batterys still charged or not?

i haven't touched athe allternator as i haven't had time. and the battery is brand new just put in last night. the volts on the dash are reading 14-15, so all good. I even connected the jump pack which is fully charged and tried starting it. no luck :?

Might not hurt to check all the connections, battery terminals etc are good and clean and the engine is earthed properly, if not you might have a farked starter motor then?

mh depending on motor ive had similar probs, wouldnt start etc, changed out for my spare, still wouldnt work, hooked up a manual switch direct from bat to get me going, then played with later, endid up that the relay wasnt working i think so u only got power from relay feed but not full power, played with it for a while, wiggled all the relays then suiddenly it just started working ok again  maybe something like that,i found that by putting a light tester on the solinoid wire and trying to start, all u saw was the slightest light that was very very dim, hope u understand what im trying to say and it helps

Sounds to me that the relay contacts are probably worn out....they will need to be replaced..i had to do this with mine...but mine is a 1KZ-TE...not sure if yours is similar.

Could also be a poor earth on the engine.

on my old 2lt if the voltage was a little low at all it did the same thing. i would take a fat screw driver and ark the selinoid (intern buypassing it) and it would start. would do it if it had been sitting awhile or had had the radio on without the car running.

give the starter a "love tap" and try it again :D works for me anyway.

so i checked some wires and fiddled with them and tapped the starter motor "gently" with a hammer  and whadda ya know, after a few more attempts she started...

still has a few issues starting sometimes though so defintly need to get it looked at. i have been told to get a 2nd hand working one as it will most likely be cheaper than getting it fixed...??? Anyone have any ideas? Also needa get the alternator looked at as its not charging the battery and will be slowly draining it...

if any one is keen to help sort any of it out there will be some beers thrown your way... :D

The starter if it clicks and throw's the gear should be an easy fix it could be mud in the springs of the brushes or the brushes themselves.

The other thing to check is the starter motor is one of the highest draw things in the system so it needs a good power and earth you can have Great power and dodgy earth you can spend an age looking for it so check the earth.
