pinion seal. 14 dollars for a new seal and 10 min work
get new seal
remove rear prop shaft (two 14mm spanners)
remove pinion flange nut (30?mm socket and power bar)
pull pinion flange out carefully.
remove seal
fit new seal
slot pinion flange back in carefully
tighten pinion flange nut back up to where it came from (tab indent)
re-fit prop shaft
top up diff oil
job done
easy eh

Sweet as, I need to do this with my 60 series rear diff.
What about replacing the pinion bearing, does the whole head need to be removed?

If you don't have the 10 mins for the procedure Wopass has suggested you could just park it on a step bank so the oil sits at the front of the diff head away from the flange.

that would work also

if rear diff the park up hill, if front diff park down hill

yes you could, or get a workshop to do it, they would charge a min hour at a gi=uess so the job would cost you (guessing a mark up on the seal) 80 bucks?

pinon bearing yes diff head out and you need to have a lot more experience to do that as you have to re set all the lash etc etc

Yeah I know that, it's a factory 60 series cable locker so I can't use the 'oh well while it's out I'll get a locker put in it'
You can replace the seal with most tools in a basic kit, the only troublesome thing would be taking out the dent thingo that holds the nuts on the pinion shaft, you need a punch for that.
Gear puller is also handy and I just bought one incase you cant get it off you can borrow it ..

My method is easier, when it stops leaking it time to refill. That way you always have fresh fluid in there
The problem comes when the diff head fills with crap and water, grinds to a halt and costs of $$$ to fix

Bubba, I thought your method was to strip everything completley and then get confused and then take it to a mechanic

I have an 80 series and have just done this to the front diff, but have found that the rear drive shaft is leaking from the transfer case... Is this as easy to fix?

Went to Ripco today to buy a oil seal - their shipment was due mid March and still hasn't arrived
Might try Auckland Bearings during the week.
I did have 2 good ones but watched them drive away today

- its always the way
