22r questions

would a 22r bolt up to everything in place of a 3y?
talked 2 a hilux dude over the weekend, said that a 22r bolts straight up, just need to keep bellhousing for the 22r.
I know its not the first choice of conversion, but if its that easy, then its gona be alot cheaper.
And i realy only need a bit more power for onroad driving
Surely a 22r with extractors, exhaust and a bigger carb would produce 30%+ more power than a 3y?

Hardly the 30% you are looking for unless you go latr model or injected. An injected 3Y is low 70 kw. Might be easier to find some EFI gear for the 3Y off a 3yE

im doing the 3y to 3ye thing and it is kinda a pain. if i was going to do it over i would buy a pointless distributor or the stuf to change mine to pointless and then go with a weber 38/38 carb. alot more power gain. kinda hard to find but you can get them from ebay oz fot about 600 to 700 kiwi. im doing the 3y-e so that i get a bit better fuel economy as i use my 4x4 for road trips alot. also for the reliability of injected.
3y is a much better motor than the 22r reading about it on the web. from looking at my manuals which have the 3y and 22r in them it does look like straight bolt up as long as you have the bell housing.

Yep looks like would only be worth it if i was going late model 22re
just exploring options at keeping it toyota and keeping the transfer a straight swap

yeah true. you dont happen to have a spare 3ye instrument cluster do you? think i fried the left side of mine.

dont quote me if im wrong but isnt the exaust on different sides on each motor
5m or 7m swaps are not that hard and if you shop around can be quite cheap and with the 7m creating 199hp good bang for buck
swb lux with 7mge, trailgear crossover, trailgear rear lift kit, custom front bar, runva 1200lb winch, custom snorkel, 37" Mtrs, custom deck, lockright in the rear.

bumping this up as, i can purchase a 22r for the same price i can sell my 3y, already have somebody keen for the 3y.
can i get a yes or no answer to confirm that the 22r will bolt up to my g52 gearbox with the 22r bellhousing and existing mounts?
i figure if its costing me nothing but less than a days labour, than its worth doing the swap for that extra 20+ hp, :lol: s.f.a i know, but with extractors and a good exhaust its gota be a good improvement, not to mention the 3y is getting a little tired,

anybody here running a 22r in their Lux?
found 1 for a fair price, its a mid 90s one with a new head last year.
I see the mid 90s ones have a noticable increase in power etc, to the earlier ones,
keen for peoples opinions on them with reliability?
if i was to buy it, i would do all the bearings and seals, gaskets before fitting to truck, along with extractors and exhaust????

Ive seen a friend rally R's for a while. He loved them until thier availabilty dropped and price exploded. He now runs a 5S (Camry 2.2L). The reason, power, lots more and an engine is circa $150.

If you want a thirsty, heavy but ultimately reliable engine, the R's are good. But in my opinion, not worth the hassle. You would be spending money on an engine you would one day only want to replace.

thing is, right now, i dont need or want alot of power. Just something with a bit more open road power than the 3y i got now, (which is getting tired) and thats reliable
The 22r in question has a new head, its a mid 90s model.
Ive got a whole lot a other plans for the truck, huge power is last on the list, fuel consumption dont bother me as its used just as a weekender...
hhmmm what to do
i just need an easy replacement in the near future without spending big bucks, as the 3y is getting tired, 22r with the new head, recoed carb, new bearings, seals, extractors, exhaust, easy replacment and 30% more power

That makes sense.
If the 22r is as cheap as it sounds, you might be able to make some cents later too.

4y-e?

If your dead keen, a 3sf with weber carb will do you 100hp easy and cheap enough. You deff can use your g series box. There isnt much needed, just one bit of shop work on the flywheel-ring gear set up and time. They go damn well in light surfs.

Cuzzy of mine has the 22r in a lowlux. Its been reconed, in good nick, and seams an ok engine.

In saying that, the grunt is piss poor (and this is on light running gear), and it chew's through the gas. I mean seriously badly. On a trip on open road he cant get 300km to a tank. He has compared it to his mates surf with a 1uzfe in it, and the v8 used way less gas and it was towing a tralier.

An allright engine, if you can put up with it.

For a little extra time and $$ you could do alot better.
