which winch would u use, on a fj

hi all , have been looking at winchs recently.
PTO or electric?

there seems to be alot of elec winchs available.
a test i read recently rated this winch as the only one to remain dry ( inside) after 2 min under water. it was a warn 9.5 xp.

then i read that it was a aussie test and they dont have that deeper water over there.
and then the price !! well o ver the 2k mark!!

what would be recomended by you guys

electric winch is good for self recovery ,can be used when vechicle is dead .pto winch good for lots of recoveries but no good when vechicle is dead .you need to decide what sort of recoveries you are most likely to do and how many other vechicles you normally go out with and what if any winchs they have .hope this helps you make your decision .personally i like pto winchs althou i would like to put a electric winch on my 80 at some stage

307 did fuel pump comin back from tauanui hut mid river on w end, pto would have been no good , then i read an electric would only drag me 4 m and the batt would be flat, and then a loong way from any where,

has any one used a 1000 dollar winch with 2 batts with any great success

If your motor is dead your fkt anyway, Pto will pull all day with no problems.. Electric is good for a couple pulls but starts to suffer when worked to hard.. Fit both if you have room and money ,, Elec in the back around a pully to the front so you can pull back or forward and pto to go foward all day .. My 2c worth .

Don't believe it. I run a warn 9500 and its just been fixed. The claim about them being waterproof is rubbish.
Apart from that am happy with performance.

I agree with your choise of winch Richard ,, Warn XP 9.5 will be the winch I hope to put under the back of my truck , 8274 is the other option but won't fit my truck .. on a truck that has the option of a PTO (FJ40) I would vote for PTO ..

PTO all day long

if you can try to find one of the very early PTO driven winches, made by GILLIES, much bigger and MUCH stronger, has offset drum to driver side as the box is huge and the drum even bigger. mine broke the 13mm steel rope without flinching and has also broken my 12,000kg dynex...both broke because i forgot to take the PTO out of gear and drove off...OOPS!!!!

having said that they are like rocking horse shit to find

the next best option is the 60 series and 70 series PTO winch, nearly as strong and much easier to find

also the coolest thing to get for your PTO winch is the 3 position PTO box, you can spool in and out in any gear the more common is the 2 postion which only spools in in all gears but you have to reverse gear to line out, still a good unit tho and very robust

I put a 60series pto on my prado(some custom work required), very happy, electrics need alot of regular care and attention, have seen a few with major issues due to slenoid packing up from water getting in on past trips. Pto much lower care. but some draw backs, have done share pin, Driven off with pto still in .I carry a few spares. If engine stops have manual ( arm strong ) winch as back up. Electrics will pull if truck not running but will depend on how good the battery to how long it will run.

Electric - $2000 for winch, $600+ twin battery setup, $400 to upgrade alternator. Strip & clean everytime it clogs with mud & water. And always wonder if it will work when you need it...

PTO - $500ish complete - fit & forget. Carry a couple of spare shear pins ($3 each - 4mm grade12 capscrew)

You want the driveshafts from a 70 series - winch and PTO output from a 60 or 70 will fit, but the 60 has 2-piece driveshaft which will need a lot more modification then the 70 series 3-piece to make it fit.

The PTOs are far from full proof as well, and need regular attention. Over the years I have seen many pack up. On our easter trip a nissan safari PTO seized up and blew an oil seal. Climbing out of the Totara a landcruiser PTO blew the side out of the housing and many people carry stronger sheer pins. A cruiser on the chasm track went through 4 in one day.
Im not against PTOs but they need to be looked after as well.

yup totaly aggree...ive had to top up the oil in mine several times... probably due to the leaky seals that i just cant be arsed to replace

and shear pins...had to replace a few of them trying to find the right one that doesnt break, think i havae it sorted now tho (grade 12.9 M8 cap screw)

I think this is a complete kit - it sounds as if he just wants the blank cover plate off your transfer case to cover the hole when he removes the PTO unit. You won't need it when you bolt the PTO on your truck.

the pto unit would only fit if wazza's has the later split case transfer as the early cast case transfer pto units have a different bolt spacing. the winch itself would be okay tho, just make a couple brackets and bolt it on then sort the prop shaft etc.

How do you recognise which transfer case you have? mine is the same year as Wazza's too.

older transfercase has a transmission brake hanging off the end.
