advice wanted- deck mounted radiators

Post by j_tomo »

hey guys, im just after advice and maybe pics.
ive got a ln65, slowly getting the 1uz in there
from looking at similar builds theres not alot of room up front, as in no room between radiator and engine
the way i figure it out you can have the flashest alloy cooler up front but unless its getting air throught it, its doing 5/8's of bugger all
so im thinking of running coolant pipes along the chassis and mounting a big radiator on the forward section of the deck with fan(s) moving the air through it
(vents in the deck also)

working on the motor (not that it should need it, its a toyota lol) would be easyier
the radiator would be away from damage

there would be like 3m of coolant pipe to help cooling

would the standard 1uz waterpump push it the coolant round ok?

whats a big cheap radiator? holden/falcon?

thanks,
jeremy

I know a couple of guys running rear mounted radiators, both running supercharged 1uz's. The standard water pump seems to do the job just fine, but air flow is still the problem. They are fine whan you are going slow in the bush but get out on the moterway and you really need a scoop (like over the roof) to direct heaps of air through the radiator.
I've just mounted the radiator in the back of my 1uz hilux, but it is not finished yet. For my radiator i have used an aftermarket alloy replacement for a supra.

sounds good! can you send me some pics of your truck?

i should have done a single cab with custom deck and mid-deck mounted cooler with air scoops, it would look a bit silly on a d/c,
might have to make some small scoops either side of deck
pics up soon

works ok but if it gets an air lock it will overheat pretty easy. u cud add a electric pump half way through the system 2 help the engine water pump out. i ended up scrappin that idea and just use flyscreen mesh on my radiator, when it fills up u just peel it out give it a wash in the creek and put it back in way u go again.
