Prado(kzj78) on going Build

Post by mudmike »

Well I have been doing a slow build on this for a few years, got it stock standard, have had a couple of requests for pics on some parts so thought I would do a build thread.

How it started
Image

Cutom bar mark2 for the PTO winch
Image

PTO mounts with shortened 60 shafts
Image

Had to mod the shifter plate from the 60 to fit on side of gear box

This is a resent few things added, Rear factory e locker, front ARB locker, 4.88 ratio's. Bigger road tyres 285/75 16 (33")
and have 35" creepys for off road.
New side bars
Image

Now adding rubber flairs to replace the factory ones that don't like taking the knocks.
Image

Now it has only taken me about 4 years to get to this stage but have a few things I want to do.
Any ideas from the floor?

if you are doing rear bars you will want to incorporate a side hoop to protect the rear lights and the rear corners which always seem to get hit....

Took off the rear bar, it's been looking after the big ass on my baby for a few years now. But it is a bit heavy 6mm plate and catches a bit to much mud.
Image

Want to redo the tow bar to be part of the bar to get better clearance

Image

Any imput would be good, am looking at putting tyre carrier on bar.

Keep the removable hitch, reuse it into your new bar and get a removable pintle that will slot into these, or mount a normal one or a towball one where the 4 bolts are so you can just use your existing bar.... stinky can get these cheap.

you may have an issue with the towball being higher when fitting trailers.....which is where the square reciever hitch thingy may be better as you can drop the tongue down a bit and replace with pintle or hook if needed, and the back of where the 4 bolts may need beefing up as there is not much behind them....

Thanks jerry, I use a warn one now, was wanting to keep the hitch, putting it just under the rear rail will give 50mm more clearance, and the being able to tow trailers if needed may be a good thing.
I like the ute chop you have done jerry.

The box section that holds the dropped tounge on mine is as tight to the chassis rail as it can go. then has box running left to right, with 10mm plate on the ends to bolt it to the chassis rails

Hi guys after some input do you think it is better to have the new bar bottom fully tucked under the rear frame rail or out a bit to give better protection? see the 3 options

option 1:

Option 2:

Mines flush with the middle leading edge, ie the bit with the 4 bolt holes. It then has a plate that comes up and bolts onto those 4 bolts.

I'll try and get a pic...

Been a bit slack with the pics.
But I have put pipe over drag link.
Finished rear bar and tested it on a couple of trips.

Image

Image

Also made some side barsthat came out nice

Image

Managed to bend the front bar today see this weekend post.
Will have to rebuild at some point.
Need more hours in the week, but looking after the kids is worth more than building the truck.

Have also put an exo on to help stop some of the panel damage and hope also some protection should the rubber not stay down.

The windscreen support just bolts on, not the strongest but the best solution for road use.

Nice build. Have you done a hilux hub conversion to eliminate the need for free wheeling hub spacers?

Post by mudmike »

thanks, yes I have done a hub swap, the main hub is off a surf only the freewheel hub is off a solid axle hilux, it was just cheaper at the time I did it.

the air ram is nice to use, have found it has a bit to much grunt, after getting mud in the free spool it bent the arm, found when I re engage the drive if I'm just winching in slowly it clicks in with no problems.

Any one of those sort of shop should get you one, you know, the enzed, TWL, Jesco type. Thats where mine came from.

I got mine with only air one way and spring return, means you can use a wee solinoid like an ARB air locker one to work it.

They are great :)

Did you need to put new stub axles in or just new hubs? Cheers, am getting sick of replacing the bolts in mine.

You don't have to swap the stubs but you can, I did swap mine, but you need to seal where the wires for the electric hubs go.
the oldblue convertion is a very good option, I only did the swap because I got the parts at the right price. It can be very costly.

You will need to send the hubs and end caps to me to convert, I have to strip them and drill/ream and fit a seal into the endcap plus removeing the motor and replacing with a dummy motor, etc.
Cost $175.00 plus the return freight.
Usually got an add on Trade-Me.
