another newbie in chch with another surf

Post by xr650r »

bit of a spur of the moment purchase but i now have a 91 vzn130 surf running a 3.8 holden v6

havent done any 4wding before so completely new to this although i have done many of the tracks i intend on doing on bikes

been reading the the massive ammount of info on the forum but have a few quick questions will i try to find the answers in the forum
- need to fit a snorkel - where is a good place in chch to get that done and any idea of price
- also need a few other bits and pieces such as flares, mudflaps so will try and get 2nd hand ones off trademe or a wreckers. there are some mudflaps for a 89 ln130 on trademe anyone know if they would fit a 91 vzn130. are they needed for a WOF?
- doesnt appear to have had a body lift so again a good place in chch to get that done and approx price
- are chains needed? went thru the clarence reserve the otherweekend and all 4wds had to carry chains - i think DOC were checking as u signed in. are they exspensive? are they needed on many other tracks in the SI?

just have to find the time to get out and have a good drive now

Or you could try Autobend for a steel snorkel, they have a heap of vehicles already in their system that they could bend up for you.

^^^^^ what he said, I was quoted $175 inc to replace my plastic POS snorkel with a steel tube one. Way cheaper to do it yourself or with the help of some mates than at the absorbent prices some shops charge.
All your mods can be done at home with some research and a little help.
Flares are cheap to get if you are after rubber extensions, look on trade me or shop around here in chch. Butlers in Stanmore Rd had some 3 inch ones (6m long) for $99.00! Others will suggest Bunnings for the garden edging, but personally I would steer clear as it is hard and doesn't bend very well. You may do more damage than if you had soft rubber ones IMHO.
I know little about doing a body lift on your truck, but research on here will no doubt solve any questions you have.
Good luck.
Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.
