extended (longer travel) front shocks R50 Terrano/Pathfinder

Post by howieh »

Looking for longer travel front shocks for my 1997 R50 terrano.
Had a lift put in. Springs and shocks, turns out that the fronts were standard, first time after a full extension drop the shock broke.
Turned out that they could not get longer traveling shock so put standard fronts in.
Now not keen on braking any more, Thinking of strapping them (like the extreme guys) but that doesn't fix the problem.
Anybody know were I can get some please?
I know the other fix is to buy something else.

Ok people, move along. Nothing to see here. Thank you, move along.

In Manukau Auckland, Do you have a phone number or website, as so-far not having any luck up here. :)

I had my work done by 'The Shock Shop' in Manukau and he told me that I would have to get the fronts specially made for the extra length. (said is AFTER I went back with the broken shock)

Measure up what what length your going to need compressed and at full extension and if you plan to put any extra weight up the front (winch, bar work) or just mention it if you already do, then give Chamberlain's, an ARB dealer a call and email 4wd bits. Freight probably isn't worth it for Chamberlain's unless they give you a good deal but the boss might be able to recommend another place closer to you if he's been around a while.

I would do all of the above and also to go to a better garage/workshop that deals with 4wd's up there and see what they know that works.

There are HEAPS of choices when it comes to shocks and I doubt you'd need a custom job but I've never owned a Terrano. If you can get stuff back from Australia on the cheap I'd look at suspensionstuff.com.au as well.

Unfortunately the R50 has Macpherson strut suspension in the front so shock is part of the leg, and there is not much choice for longer struts infact when I replaced mine in my daily driver, I could only get KYBs and standard ones at that. That was a few years ago, maybe there might be something else around now :?: Nearly all other 4x4s use a different suspension set up with separate shocks. Mcpherson struts are generally used in cars :(

Am starting to think that. Wish the Guy had told me this before I spent the money. (He implied that it would be more than just a spring lift.Asked all the question, obviously heard what I wanted to hear.)

Wondering about making it standed again and getting somethink else, although it goes every where my son-in-laws Landy does

Have measured the shocks that came off, extended they are 625mm
closed 460mm Sounds like they are longer than the replacements you can now get.
Have spoken to Shock Absorber Services. in Manukau and they can extend the shaft to give longer travel but will not change the compressed length. don't know if it is worth it.

Any advise please.
