Im looking at buying some chains.
What experiences have other people had with brands etc and also where to buy for a fair price.

Are you getting organised for the godley trip? what size are you needing?
Toyota Landcruiser FJ40, front and rear lockers, 35" simex.
Toyota FJ45 build in progress.
Tires are like boobs, they always look big until you have played with them for a while, then you just want a bigger set.

this place is really good and will have everything you need along with the correct info and advice unlike some other places with a pimpley faced teenager who looks in a book and tells you "i think these will fit dude" and then trys to sell you a blow off valve or pod filter.

tallsam go in to the above place i was in there last year gettin prices for some for the vx 250 each for 35'' made up.

they have a set for a front end loaded there and they are BIG

if you have a look on trdme, burnside motors i think are selling a few good sets. expensive though, around 2-300 depending on size i guess. like the ones in the pic

Don't spend less than $200 a set new. It can be a bit painful waiting for people becasue their chains arn't up to the task. Also steer clear of the ones with springs and elastic in them.

Ladder type are by far the best for traction but may lack some directional stabiltiy and are no use when you are locked up!!

I am going to make some diamond style ones. If some one has made some and have some do's and do not's would be good to hear before I start. I just have a rough plan in my head.

Yep, as generally there is not many cross bars, in slippery conditions it is important to kep the wheels turning as it is easy to get the wheels on the ground and missing the cross links - does that make sense, I can't work out how to explain.

Mud hog, if you are going to use your chains in muddy conditions at any stage don't bother with diamond type.

that makes sences with the ladder design, but if the ifs are locked wouldnt this keep the wheels turning so the gap is only small.

just had a throught if locked there is a higher chance the chains would be forced to slip on the ice. mmmm make sence on.

would that be like driving on a solid surface (high traction) all locked up? unlocked in 4wd (unlocked centre diff that is) or all wheel drive with chains would be best then, so there isnt a chance of transmission wind up.

I give up, too hard on brain... :?

Get ladder style ones Trev, and make sure they are ice breakers, big and chunky.

go for Ladder style diamond chains from CPS (The guys above), when you buy them you might want an extra bungy for each tyre depending on the clearance in your wheel arches.

I think you may find when NJ is saying locked up, he means the wheels are locked up IE brake fully on. You need to keep the wheels turning to get the chains in contact with the ground as there is a sizeable tyre contact area that will not have a chain cross bar touching the ground and if your wheels are not turning, and this is the patch touching the ground, then the chains will not benefit you at all.
