2l-te turning over but not firing

Hey guys ive just got my hilux on saturday, drove it home ran mint, went away for the weekend came back last night and started it up (it turned over a few times before it started) then it ran fine straight away.

Today i went out to start it and its just turning over and over and not firing or attempting too.

I know nothing about diesels (its my first one)

So far all i can figure out is:

Its turning over and white smoke is coming out the back
The glow plug light is coming on on the dash and going out followed by the relay click.

Any help would be apprieciated

If someone felt the need to come help me out in person (west auckland) i certainly wouldnt say no

possibly not glowing? check ur glow plugs are working.. take em out n bench test them

Cheers man ill give that a try. I got told that it should still start without glow plugs it just needs to turn over more or something?

mine is really hard to start if ya dont glow it

this just isnt starting at all... just keeps turning over and not doing anything... Have tried triple warming the plugs but still nothing.

water in the fuel, after sitting for a day or three the water has settled to the bottom of the tank? maybe.

try pumping up the primer pump recently the seals went on mine and the diesel would sometimes drain back to tank

It could be a possibility how would i check/get rid of it? Im guessing meths in the tank wouldnt work?

I tried that and it doesnt feel right to me. Usually they are hard to pump or get harder to pump.

This one is just pumping and not doing anything.

just go grab one from a wrecker, they are pretty generic through different models

I pulled out the glow plugs and gave them a bit of a wipe down as they were covered in oil.

I will put it back together and see how i go. Will try not to snap anymore glowplug threads off the top

probably a stupid question but it does have gas in it aye? You wouldn't be the first to try for ages to get a car to run on no fuel...

the glow plug timmers are shit house especially when your glow plugs/motor is getting a bit tired. I used to have to flick my key on and off about ten times to generate enough glow to start it. It was far easier to ditch the timmer and hook up a non latching button that ya hold down for as long as you want before cranking the key..

Ok we put it back together and it still wouldnt start. I txt the old owner and he said its done it a couple of times to him and just need to roll start it.

So we roll started it and it started straight away then it started off the key perfectly everytime after that... what could that be?

can still be the glow mate, once its warm it doesnt need as good a glow to get going. Also could be a battery issue, how was was it cranking over? They do need a really good sized battery with plenty of grunt to get them going from cold.

Yea thats true. We tried another battery from my mates MU it didnt make a difference.

the glow plug timmers are shit house especially when your glow plugs/motor is getting a bit tired. I used to have to flick my key on and off about ten times to generate enough glow to start it. It was far easier to ditch the timmer and hook up a non latching button that ya hold down for as long as you want before cranking the key..

Do not just fit a button you will just over glow and burn the glow plugs out.
Did you put power on each glow plug when you had it out to see if they worked?
They should glow at the same speed and should be on the tip of the plug. If not get new plugs. Genuine plugs are cheap
Then refit 3 of the plugs into the engine, flip the fourth plug upside down and put the small thread thru the power rail and put the nut on so is getting power but the element is pointing up in the air. Now put a good wire lead onto the thread of upside down glow plug and connect to battery negative
Then turn ignition on and watch exposed glow plug to see how red plug gets till the timer turns off. The click you mentioned earlier should be the timer turning of the solenoid.
The exposed plug should glow to a nice red but not a bright extreme red.

I never had a problem using a push button, much cheaper and more reliable than the shitty timmer. But yes you are right you wouldn't want to be holding it down all day ha ha
